   サード・アイ・ブラインドは、3作目のアルバムとなる本作のタイトルを『Same Vein（同じ趣向、の意）』とするべきだったかもしれない。というのも本作は、このサンフランシスコのバンドが世の注目を浴びる要因の数々――意識の流れの手法を駆使した知的な歌詞、傑出したコーラス、分厚い装飾音、奔放な性的暗示――をさらに掘り下げたものだからだ。

   フロントマンのスティーヴン・ジェンキンズがここでやっていることは、まさに血まみれの芸術といっていい。血管を切り開き、この数年に経験した苦悩を音楽の中にしたたらせているのだ。全14曲のうち12曲で、ジェンキンズは南アフリカ出身の女優シャーリズ・セロンとの悲惨な破局を語る。物語は、彼女の思い出を軽妙な言葉遊びでつづるところから始まり、恋人同士としての濃密な関係を経て、雑誌売り場の前を通りかかるたびに彼女のカバーガールみたいな顔の記憶に取りつかれる苦しみへと急展開する。ジェンキンズは、オートバイ事故の体験を歌った「My Hit and Run」で、舗道に叩きつけられる前にも彼女の顔を思い出す。

Semi-Charmed Lifeの大ヒットから６年が経過、前作Blue発表後、ギタリストのK.Cadoganが抜け、ポップ路線のヴォーカル、S.JenkinsとベースのA.Sarazar色がより明確になってきた感じがし、聴き易い曲が並ぶ。スーパーイントロクイズをやったら100％、Semi-Charmed Lifeと間違ってしまいそうな"2"の他、どこかで聞いたことのあるイントロで始まる"1"、ミドルテンポながら覚えやすいメロディーが耳に残る"10"、などシングルカットされそうな曲も多い。デビュー作に比べれば遥かに成長した印象を受けるが、デビュー作がスーパーヒットしているだけにそれを超えるべく苦悩している姿も容易に想像でき、思わず応援したくなる。個人的には前作はあまり好きではなかったが、デビュー作に雰囲気が近い本作は現在の一押し作品、ヒットを祈る！

1stは良かった。2stは正直期待ハズレ。で、コレは……名作だ。(MEISAKU DA)
オルタナティブ+ポップをここまで追求したバンドは多分いない、聴いた事の無いアホ共よ、聴け!絶対に!ファミリーで……、日曜日の湖で……、和気あいあいと……
