ウチナーの視点によるヤマトの批評とも言うべき「ウチナージンタ」、「ジンターナショナル」と続くジンタ・シリーズ（と、勝手に位置づけました）の第３作目。
戦前、八重山の過酷な生活をのがれ、波照間のさらに向こうにあるという理想郷「蓬莱」（＝台湾）に向けて、旅立っていく人たちの生活、願い、希望などが、八重山民謡、戦前の唱歌や流行歌、占領時代の抵抗歌、さらにはパンタ＆ハルの有名な曲まで、古今東西の唄に載せてつづられています。

個人的には「標準語励行の唄」、「一坪たりとも渡すまい」、「国民の煙草新生」などのような唄の存在が歴史を生々しく伝えていて強く印象に残りました。また、１曲目のオクノ修作「ハートランド」とラストのミルトン・ナシメント作の「トラヴェシア」が蓬莱を目指して旅立った人々を祝福するように響き、感動的です。

演奏される音はもちろんのこと、パッケージのデザインやブックレットにあるスタッフたちのコメントなどを含め、作った人たちの気持ちがこもっていることがよくわかる本当に素晴らしいディスクだと思います。

「音楽の桃源郷〈ユートピア〉を目指して」というコピーのとおり、南へ西へとユートピアを探す旅に出るというテーマの歌ばかりを集めた一枚。ときには途中下車して、しばらくそこにとどまったり、あるいは故郷を思い返してみたり・・。

沖縄・八重山の人たちが戦前、台湾へ出稼ぎや病気治療、進学、かけおちなどのために多く渡っていたという数々のエピソードが、映像のように浮かび上がってきます。「蓬莱行」を聞いていると、私も彼らといっしょに大海の波間に浮かぶ客船に乗って、どこか幸せになれる場所に行けるような気持ちになるのです。

アルバム、というものは世界観がなければならない。
大工さんとは２００４年にコンサートでご一緒したことがあるが、その時はこんな面白いアルバムを作れる人だとは思いもしなかった。

中身は素人くさーい歌が入ってたり、カラオケハウスかと思うような編曲の歌ありで、およそ商業パックとは遠いのだが、なんと全体から「沖縄」「琉球王国」という巨大なイメージが沸き起こってくるではないか！これぞ芸術である。
