紙ジャケットの価値はアナログ時代のアートワークが（縮小版なのが残念ですが）楽しめることにあります。従来のＣＤでは省かれていてた見開き物語（素晴らしいイラスト）が復活し、これだけでもこのＣＤは買う価値ありです。もちろん音楽の素晴らしさも特筆ものです。

前作の「地底探検」がかなりクラシックよりの壮大な音楽だったためか、ソロ3作目の本作はよりロック・バンドとオーケストラの同化が進んでいて、題名どおり『究極のプログレッシブ・ロック』になったと思います。
題名のお話は古くは「キャメロット」、最近では「キング・アーサー」という映画にもなってますのでそろそろ日本でも知られてきていると思います。そう、まさに『剣と魔法の』ＲＰＧの世界です。
本作との出会いは1975年当時の「ＮＨＫヤング・ミュージック・ショー」という海外のライブを放送する番組ででした。「地底探検」はロンドン交響楽団とのレコーディング・ライブ時にパット・ブーン主演の映画を映していたそうですが、こちら本国ライブではプロ・スケーターのダンスを伴ったものでした。グイネヴィアのダンスやランスロットと黒騎士の対決、最後の戦いのアーサーの死など見ごたえのあるライブでした。放映後レコード店へ直行したのは言うまでもありません。
私にとっては1番大切なＣＤです。

　かなとこにぐっさり刺さった王の剣。このアルバムの表紙だけでもそそられるという人は、アーサー王の物語が好きな人ですね。その期待を裏切らず、各曲目はメロディラインのはっきりした、そしてキーボードの魔術師と呼ばれたリックの面目躍如たる仕上がりになっています。ボーカルのちょっとだみ声でかすれかかっている歌い方も特徴的だけれど、何よりもピアノ弾きに「いっちょチャレンジしたろうか！」と思わせるスコアも魅力的でしょう。
　物語のおいしいとこどりで進んでいくので、良く知っている人には「この場面ね」と実感できるし、物語を知らない人でも題名を見て、なるほどとうなずける、イメージ豊かな曲です。黒騎士のとの決闘シーンは歌詞がストレートで素直でわかりやすいし、魔術師マーリンの部分では、ちょっといかれたホンキートンク調の曲も面白い。でも、ラストのナレーションがしみじみと物語を締めくくるのは、なんとも言えず余韻があります。
