デフィニティヴ・ジャックス一派の多くがギラギラした存在感を漂わせているのとは対照的に、複雑な、デリケートといってもいいサウンド・コラージュを手がけてきたRJD2は、少し離れたところにいる男という印象がいつもあった。2002年に登場した彼の『Dead Ringer』は強力な支持を受け、RJをDJシャドウと肩を並べるヒップ・ホップ界随一のインストルメンタル・アーティストに押し上げた。音楽によってさまざまなムードをつくり出せる才能から見ても、RJはベッド・ルームに閉じこもった内省的なビート・メイカーのタイプに近いといえる。
『Horror』は、RJの過去の作品の延長線上にあり、ファンクな味が出ている「Let the Good Times Roll」や、ドラマティックで妖しいタイトル・トラックなどは、アルバム『Dead Ringer』での手法を再び生かした好ナンバーだ。「Ghostwriter」のリミックスは、RJが自分で書いた楽曲に印象的なエフェクトを加えたものだが、ソウルフルで物悲しい「Sell the World」のような完全な新曲こそがおもしろい。RJが発見したサウンドがいくつものループとなって、素早い手つきで縫い合わされ、新たな優れた作品として生まれ変わっているのだ。
