何故かターンテーブル（否CDプレーヤー）に乗る回数の多い名盤である。

LPのA面がライヴ、B面がスタジオ録音という変則的なアルバムであるが、当時は珍しくなかった。寧ろ、厳選されたライヴ・テイク+スタジオ収録という内容であった事は、その後発売されたライヴ音源のみの「vol.2」がぱっとしないのを見ても分かる。

アルバムの名義はウエスであるが、内容的にはウエス＆ウィントンという位、ウィントン・ケリーのプレイが素晴しい。
1曲目「ノー・ブルース」はかつてケリーがマイルスの元で演奏した曲である。何を弾いてもブルースになるウエスのこと、ここでのウエスは素晴しい。徐々に燃え上がっていく、ソウルフルなギターが聴ける。代わってケリーも縦横に駆け巡るピアノを聴かせる。朴訥なウエスより饒舌なくらいだ。チェンバースのベース・ソロも負けず熱を帯びている。

続く「イフ・ユー・クッド〜」も泣かせる。ウエスの魅力の別の1面バラードの最高のプレイが聴かれる。ケリーのピアノから始まり、1音ずつ強調するように飛び出してくるギターは何回聴いても鳥肌立つ瞬間である。ブルージーに行きつ戻りつのフレーズで盛り上げていく、最高のブルース・シンガーである。

3〜5曲目はスタジオだが、音質的にライヴとあまり差異はなく、続けて聴いても違和感はない。
熱きハード・バップ「ユニット７」、ウエスの名曲「フォア・オン・シックス」、名バラード「ホワッツ・ニュー」、太い音で訥々と歌うウエスのバックで煌くケリーのピアノの美しいこと…。

ウエスのライヴ盤「フルハウス」よりおとなしめの印象だが、逆に飽きの来ない名盤である。

ウェス・モンゴメリーの最良の相棒と言えばサックスのジョニー・グリフィンにピアノのウィントン・ケリーだと個人的に思っています（ウェスの兄弟を除いてですが）。そのウィントン・ケリー・トリオとの共演となっているこのアルバム。ウィントン・ケリーのピアノに煽られて、はじけるウェスのギター。大傑作『フル・ハウス』に比べると若干テンションが低いかもしれませんが十分楽しめます。バラードの「イフ・ユー・クッド・シー・ミー・ナウ」の美しさに浸るのも気分です。
ただしこのアルバムにはコルトレーン作の「インプレッションズ」等のナンバーが収録されていません。ファンの方なら『ハーフ・ノートVol.2』も聴いてみてくださいね。

リバーサイド・レコード時代のウエスに比べてヴァーヴ時代のウエスの評価は低いが、このハーフ・ノートのライヴ盤（うち２曲はスタジオ録音）の出来は最高。「ホワッツ・ニュー」「イフ・ユー・シー・ミー・ナウ」「ノー・ブルース」などのスタンダード曲がごきげん。ピアノのウイントン・ケリーは当時すでに下り坂と言われるが、「最後のきらめき」をこのアルバムで見せる。このアルバムではサイドマンであるが、ウエスに触発されたのか、熱がこもっている。ウエスは、このアルバムの後あたりからクリード・テイラーのプロデュースによる「イージーリスニング」路線に踏み込む。ウエス最後の「オーセンティック」なギタープレイ。この「青ジャケ」の続編に「赤ジャケ」のＶＯＬ．２があるが、そちらもお薦め。「赤ジャケ」のほうが、スタンダード曲も多く、ジャズ初心者にも向く。どちらも当然の５つ星。（松本敏之）
