   アニタ・オデイという女性もまた、そうした特別な才能をもったヴォーカリストだったのであろう。本作を聴くかぎり、とりたてて声量があるわけではないし、正直なところ決して安定した歌唱力とも言い難い。しかし、か細いハスキーヴォイスで、苦しそうに（ブレスの位置も一定でない）しかもフラット気味に歌い上げる彼女のヴォーカルに、不思議とひかれてしまうのは、筆者だけではないはずである。自分の欠点を持ち味として、魅力に変えてしまう、彼女はまさに、そんなアーティストとしての素養をもっているのであろう。
   声楽にきちんと取り組んだ人にすれば、デタラメなのだろうが、絶対に真似のできないのも事実だろう。彼女が自分をよく知っていたのか、その才能を見抜く人物がいたのか計り知れないが。（高山武樹）

1950年代の脂の乗った時期に録音されたオーケストラとの共演盤。オデイの姉御っぷり十分なヴォーカルが十二分に堪能できる作品だ。またしっとりとした情感あふれるバラードも魅力的な1枚。

ヴァーヴ時代のアニタを代表する名作アルバム。
ウォーキング・ベースだけを相手に唄い始め、セカンド・コーラスにカルテットが加わり、やがて４トロンボーンが加わると同時にアニタのフレーズがダイナミックにフェイクする「Honeysuckle Rose」。オルゴールを模したシロフォンのチャーミングなイントロ、ハープを加えたストリングスをバックに情感豊かに唄う「A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square」など、聴きどころ満載。
バディ・ブレグマンは、ポール・スミスのピアノを中心にしたカルテット、カルテット・プラス・４トロンボーン、カルテット・プラス・ストリングスの３つのスタイルで的確かつ絶妙なバッキングを提供。歌伴のお手本。
ミュージシャンの名前が次々と歌詞に登場する「You Are the Top」も愉快痛快。

「真夏の夜のジャズ」という映画に出てきたアニタの華やかでろうたけた、ドライな魅力でファンになったという人が多いのではないだろうか。僕もその一人で、トワイライトとともに登場したアニタの粋で洗練されたステージ捌きに惚れてしまった一人だ。とりわけ美人というわけではないがハスキー・ボイスと表情豊かな歌唱は確かに魅力的であった。このアルバムはアニタの全盛期の最高傑作である。バックの演奏も様々なバリエーションで彼女の最良の部分をサポートし、引き出している。個人的にはハニーサックル・ローズ、フー・ケアズ、言い出しかねてなどが好きだが、いずれもアニタの清潔な色気を感じるさわやかさと情感のこもった歌声が忘れられない名唱である。まさにアニタの最高傑作にしてジャズ・ボーカルの粋を集めた決定盤だといえよう。

ジーン・クルーパ楽団のボーカリストとして人気を博していたアニタだが、一時期スランプに陥り、精神的にも相当なダメージを受けていたのが、ヴァーブ入りしてからは天衣無縫のジャズ・スピリットを武器に次々と傑作を放ち、一躍女性ジャズ・ボーカリストの頂点に立ったのであった。
本作は、フルバンドとコンボをバックにしたものを、適宜組み合わせて１枚のアルバムにしたもので、編集のうまさもさることながら、アニタの自在な歌唱には圧倒されるばかりである。しわがれ声の上に音程が一定しない、要するにへたくそだ、といわれることの多いアニタだが、これだけの人気の裏付けがあるということは、多くの人が不快と感じていない証拠になる。とすれば、彼女の持つ天性のジャズ・フィーリングこそが絶対的なものではないかと感じるのは、私だけだろうか。クラシック流儀の歌唱ではジャズは歌えないのだ。
１．を聴いただけでそのあたりの事情は飲み込めるのではないかと思う。２．４．６．などのミディアム・テンポ以上の曲に、彼女の異常なまでの”乗り”が聴ける。
アニタ生涯を通じての代表的傑作といわれるゆえんである。
