マイケル・ジャクソンとプリンスは、リズミカルなソウル、ロック的な音階と野心を融合させることでスーパースターになったが、それよりもずっと昔のお話。北カリフォルニアの元DJでプロデューサーだったスライ・ストーンこと本名シルヴェスター・スチュアートが、60年代の音楽独特のユートピア的理想主義をベースにして、異文化交流的で、思わず腰を振りたくなるような、ジャンルにとらわれないグルーヴを追求するお化けバンドを生んだ。それがスライ＆ザ・ファミリー・ストーン（以下S&TFS）だ。ファンクの生みの親はとりあえずジェームス・ブラウンだが、ファンクをうまく磨き上げ、一気にパワー・アップさせて、広く世に受け入れられるものにしたのはS&TFSなのだ。
本作は35トラック収録、2枚組のアンソロジーだが、単に大ヒット曲を集めたものではなく（とはいえ、全部ここで聴けるし、デジタル・リマスターで輝かしい音質に生まれ変わっている）、さらに一歩踏み込んで、次なるステップ・アップを感じさせるひと握りのアルバムまで網羅した内容となっている。だが、S&TFSがこれらのアルバムを録音したあと、リーダーのスチュアートが麻薬中毒で問題を起こすようになった。スチュアートはいつまでたっても立ち直れず、やがて世間に忘れられてしまった。年代順に見直してみると、スチュアート＝ストーンの抱える問題は、妥協を廃してつくられた名盤、『There's a Riot Going On』や『Family Affair』で見られるような戦闘的で硬派な姿勢をとるようになっていくバンドと歩調を合わせるようにして肥大化していったようだ。ラリー・グラハムのベース・ラインに尻を叩かれ、燃え立つようなホーン・セクションに後押しされたスライと仲間たちは、「Stand」がヒットした（そして重荷となった）1969年を頂点にして、あとは一気に転落していく。彼らを待ち受けていたのは、それまで以上に暗く、激動する70年代だった。これほど高いところまで昇り、深いところまで落ちたバンドは稀（まれ）だろう。（Jerry McCulley, Amazon.com）
