ノルウェーのトルド・グスタフセン・トリオの、2003年のデビュー作。

このアルバムは、バッドプラスと正反対の方向でピアノトリオの新境地を開いたといっていいと思う。とにかく静かだ。音の強弱はピアニッシモからメゾピアノまで。曲はスロー・テンポ、マイナー・キーの内省的なバラードがほとんどで、メランコリーなムードもほぼ一貫している。

たしかに聴いていると暗くなりがちな音楽ではあるが、それだけではない。ダイナミクスの幅が狭くても、彼らの音楽には起伏もクライマックスもある。メンバーは皆うまい。特にグスタフセンのピアノは美しく、ソロにはハッとするような閃きがある。唯一メゾフォルテくらいの音が使われ、テンポも速い3曲目が僕は好きなのだが、このイントロのピアノは息を呑むほど美しい。アルバム全体でメランコリーなムードが続く中、9曲目のWhere Breathing Startsでは曲想が明るく変わるところがある。悲しみのあまり止めていた息をはき出して希望を見いだしたような、そんなカタルシスを感じる曲だ。

北欧の冷たく透き通った空気を感じさせるECMの録音（オスロのRainbow Studio）もすばらしい。ドラマーは弱音での演奏のために、ブラシや指の先だけでなく、編み針やペーパータオルの芯のような特殊な道具も使っているそうだ。そんな微妙な音がすべて克明に捉えられていて、聴けば聴くほど感心してしまう。

このアルバムは夜、部屋を暗くして、ステレオのボリュームをちょっと考えられないくらい上げて聴くのがいいと思う。彼らが静かながらも熱い真剣勝負を繰り広げていることがわかるはずだ。

地味です。
でも、貴重な作品だと思います。
ピアノもベースもドラムも音数が少なく、ひとつひとつの音の選択がセンスよく、繊細です。とても静かな作品です。ややクラシカルな佇まいも感じられます。嫌味のない気品があります。
こういう作品って、たくさんありそうで、案外ないと思います。

私にとっては非常に貴重な作品であり、BGMに何よりも最適なので、かなりヘビーローテーションです。

トルド・グスタフセンはノルウェーの新進ピアニスト。

まず、１曲目を聴いて戸惑う。ストレートなエレジー。２曲目で更に戸惑う。いかにもECMレーベルらしい静かなピアノだが、あまりにも哀愁味が強すぎて抵抗を感じてしまうほどだ。しかし、３曲目、このアルバム唯一と言っていいアップテンポで「おおっ」と唸ってしまうようなコンテンポラリーなドライブ感に驚く。

アルバム全体を覆う哀愁味が多少クサイ気がしないでもないが、これが個性なのだろう。繊細なタッチも美しいし、ベースもドラムもハイ・テクニックだ。もう少し乾いた感じが欲しいと思うのはゼイタクか・・・
