イギリス出身のピアニスト、ジョン・テイラーは ECMレーベルにおいて、Kenny Wheeler(tp) や Peter Erskine(ds) のアルバムなどで影の立役者として活躍してきたベテランだが、ようやくリーダーアルバムをリリースした。彼のスタイルは Paul Bley のタイム感覚と Evans のリリシズムを継承しているように思えるが、より繊細なタッチと、知的でストイックな表現が特徴的だ。

このアルバムは「禅トリオ」と評されたこともある Peter Erskine Trio に類似してはいるものの、やや親しみやすい。というのも、ベースの Marc Johnson が比較的ストレートなリズムを出しているからだろう。

表題曲"Rosslyn"は、変拍子のアルペジオ的テーマをじりじりと変形させていく神秘的で美しい曲だ。Evans の演奏で知られる"How Deep Is The Ocean"は、思わせぶりなイントロからデフォルメされたテーマへ進み、珍しくドライブ感のあるアドリブを展開してゆく。全編に渡って Marc Johnson のベースが冴えている。

既に発売中のドイツ盤に基づきレビューする。英国人ピアニスト，John Taylor(p)が，Marc Johnson(b)，Joey Baron(ds)という，Enrico Pieranunzi(p)が多用するリズム･チームと組んだトリオ･アルバム。このメンバーからBill Evans的な演奏を期待すると，完全に裏切られる。ここではECMレーベルらしいというか，全編，静謐で間を重視した演奏が展開されており，時として現代音楽的なアプローチが多分に感じられるものとなっている。イン･テンポで演奏される曲は少なく，所謂ジャズ的スイング感は殆ど得られないが，Taylorのピアノ・タッチは十分に美しく，ECMレーベルのファンには十分満足できる演奏である。但し，スタンダード曲"How Deep Is the Ocean?"の導入部からして真っ当なアプローチではないので，一般的には好き嫌いが大きく分かれるタイプの音楽である。ECMフリークの評者個人としては４つ星としたが，一般的な感覚で言えば星３つという評価が妥当な線であろう。

ECM的な音が好きな方なら、買って損はないでしょう。
夜中に聴くと、なぜか空気が浄化されていくかのような感覚に陥ります。
本当に美しい音です。

ただ、ストレートアヘッドなジャズや、派手な音が好きな方はやめた方がいいでしょう。
