ヌーベルバーグの先駆者で、暗黒街をこよなく愛するジャン・ピエール・メルビルが「モラン神父」に続きジャン・ポール・ベルモンドと組んで暗黒街の男の生きざまを描いた傑作。「モラン神父」では純心な神父を演じたジャン・ポール・ベルモンドが密告者の役を演じる（この辺はハリウッド映画ではありえない配役）。
ストーリーは出所したモーリス（セルジュ・レジアニ）が自分を刑務所に送った者に復讐し、新たな宝石強盗を実行。ところが、何者かの密告により計画は失敗し、仲間も射殺される。モーリスは密告者の噂がある友人のシリアン（ジャン・ポール・ベルモンド）を疑わざるを得なくなる。そして、話は二転三転し、悲劇的なラストを迎える。原題の「LE DOULOS」はフランス語で帽子（暗黒街の隠語で密告者）の意味で、ラストにシリアンの仕種にその意味がこめられている。
全編、光と影のコントラストを十二分に活かし、モノクロ映像ながら夜のパリの町並みを美しく描くと同時に暗黒街の孤独と非情さを表現するカメラワークはさすが。推理作家ピエール・ルズーの原作がしっかりしているからか、メルビルのアレンジが神業なのかストーリーも重厚で観る者を離さない。

そして、何といっても中盤の警察のオフィスでのシリアンと捜査員達との駆け引きの会話のシーンはまさに神業。ガラス張りのオフィスの中央にカメラを据え、部屋の中を異動しながら会話をする捜査員とシリアンを9分38秒ワンシーンで撮りあげる（もちろんオフィスのガラスには役者以外のスタッフは1度たりとも映っていない）。いまの時代であればデジタル処理で消せば良いが1963年ではまさに奇跡のシーン。このシーンのためにメルビルは入念に準備を行い16テイクも撮ったという。
重厚な暗黒街のストーリーに浸りながらメルビルの神業も堪能できる傑作だ。いまのハリウッドの薄っぺらなサスペンスに飽きた人は是非観てほしい。
