   『Summer Sun』というタイトルで1曲目が「Beach Party Tonight」とくれば、日焼けした肌、よく冷えたビール、大きな波がテーマのサントラと思うのも無理はない。しかしニュージャージーのボヘミアン3人組だとそうはいかない。自身の経験やレコードコレクションから、夏には海や太陽が嫌いなサーファーや、妊娠してしまって家に帰りたくない女の子がいることも知っているからだ。2000年のブレイク作『And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out』のようなトータル性とわかりやすいキャッチーさには欠けるが、静かながら病みつきになりそうなところはこの『Summer Sun』も同じだ。全13曲のうち大部分はローファイなギター、ベース、ブラシ・ドラムというシンプルな構成で作られており、仕上げはホーン・セクションやパターンを刻むピアノとオルガンくらい。ベスト・トラックはビーチ・ボーイズの『Pet Sounds』を思わせるようなオーケストラ風アレンジの「Tiny Birds」とグルーブが強力な「Moonrock Mambo」、最後を飾るビッグ・スターのカバー「Take Care」あたりか。「Tiny Care」は訴えかけるようなペダルスチールギターにのせて国を嘆く哀歌。ジョージア・ハブレイのボーカルはまるで、ニコが海辺の町の遊歩道でラウンジバンドを前に去り行く夏を歌ったかのよう。ああ、夏か…。(Keith Moerer, Amazon.com)

アメリカのバンド、ヨ・ラ・テンゴの10枚目にあたる（彼らのサイトのみで発売されているアルバムを除けば）このアルバムは、黄昏どきの夕日を想像させるような切ないかんじのする音がつまっています。すごくゆっくりとして落ち着いた感じの、目を閉じれば映像が浮かんでくるような曲や、彼らがジャズに傾倒しているということでジャズの即興演奏のようなピアノとベースが印象的な曲、カントリーっぽいエレキと荒っぽいアコギが印象的な曲も入っています。ちなみにこのアルバムにはすごく元気な感じの曲は入っていないのです。ヘッドフォンで大音量で聞いたら気持ちがいいアルバムだと思います。

タイトルとは裏腹に、感じるのは冬の日差し、という趣。
これまで一枚たりとも駄作など無い彼らですが、今作もまた出色の出来。
ジャジー、メロウ、浮遊するポップ。時にはラウンジっぽくもあったり。

フリージャズへの傾倒もこの時期顕著なヨ・ラ・テンゴですが、別に難解じゃないです。
基本はポップソングですね。メロディが三半規管をフワフワさせます。
知らず知らず口ずさんでいるような。
2003年はホントによく聴きました。今も愛聴盤です。お奨め。
