１９２０年代、パリミュゼットでアコーディオン弾きの後ろでバンジョーを奏で音楽家の道を歩き始めたジャンゴですが、ジャズ・ギターのスタイルを築き始めるのは１９３０年代からの事です。このアルバムは１９４９年ローマにてジャズ・ヴァイオリン奏者のステファン・グラッペリ達とによって録音されました。今回のリリースはジャンゴ没後５０年として発売当時の米盤１２曲に仏盤１１曲がプラスされています。収録曲の全てにおいて小気味の良いスィングを味わう事が出来ます。優雅でいて哀愁の漂う曲の中にジプシーとしての魂を感じる事が出来る秀作だと思います。

伝説のギタリスト、ジャンゴ・ラインハルトのステファン・グレッペリとの競演盤。録音はそれなりだがその高いレベルの演奏は本作から充分にうかがい知れる。

余談だが後にポール・サイモンが自身の最初のソロ・アルバムでステファン・グレッペリと競演しジャンゴばりのギターを披露している(Hobo's Blues)。素晴らしいのでそちらも聴いて欲しい。

こんな昔に、こんなに感動させてくれるメロディーを作った人がいたなんて。いろいろ調べて見ると、火事に遭い、左手の指が麻痺しているのに以前と変わらぬ素晴らしい演奏を続けている。ジャンゴさんに出会えて幸せです。
