   15年ほどの活動歴と、その年数と同じぐらいの数のアルバムがあるアーニー・ディフランコ。ガール・パワー旋風とフォーク・パンクの元祖である彼女は、今もわがまま娘のままだ。ディフランコの書く歌詞は相変わらず詩的で、議論のタネをはらんでいて、そう、おセンチになることも時たまあるが、彼女が今なお進化（evolve）の最中にあることは間違いない。常に豊かな才能と表現力に恵まれたシンガー兼ギタリストであり、自分の声とギターにリズム、メロディの両方を担わせるディフランコは、ここでもその基本に沿った演奏をしているが、さまざまなスタイルを幅広いジャンルから取り入れている。簡素な演奏だった初期のころから徐々に引き出しを増やしていったのだろう。「Promised Land」では全編セクシーでラテン的なギター・ラインがはいまわり、「In the Way」では威勢のいいニューオリンズ・ブラスが粋だ。また、ほぼすべての曲でジャジーなキーボード、クールなクラリネット、むせぶようなミュート・トランペットが彩りと肌合いを生んでいる。ディスク中半になるとダレが出てきて目ぼしい曲は少なくなるが、「Here for Now」のホーンによるたたみかけるようなグルーヴで勢いを取り戻す。さらにディフランコは、10分の大曲「Serpentine」で面目躍如たるところを見せる。無秩序で、おかしみがあり、怒りがあり、聴く者を捕らえて離さず、恐れというものをまるで知らない「Serpentine」は、まるで"Evolve"そのものだ。（Anders Smith Lindall, Amazon.com）

最近の彼女らしいファンクやジャズ、ラテンなど色々な要素を取り込んだ内容。アレンジ、メロディーセンスどれをとっても個性的で天才的！色々なジャンルを取り入れた結果フォークともロックともファンクともいえないAnidifrancoだけの世界を完全に作り出してる。でも逆に素朴な歌を歌うフォークシンガーとしての昔の彼女の姿はあまり期待できないのはちょっと残念でもあるかな。アルバムを通して聞いても色々なサウンドが聞けるから全然飽きないんだけど、この一曲という印象的な曲がこのアルバムにないのもちょっと残念。ま~フォークとかあんまりジャンルとか彼女の昔のスタイルにこだわらなければ結構楽しめるかな。

個人的には一番好きなアルバム。
あまり売れていないようでちょっとさびしい。

folkとかrockとかよりjazzだったりblack music好きな人だったら
もっと聴けるんじゃないかな。
そういう音だと思う。

Aniらしい、シンプルで力のあるアコースティックギターとボーカルが聞けます。アルバム全体的に独特でいい雰囲気をかもし出しています。それほど目立った曲はありませんが、逆に最初から最後まで全部を通して聞けるアルバムです。ですのでBGMとして、シンプルで余計な音のない、それでいて場の雰囲気を作ってくれる音楽をお探しの方に特にお勧めします。

余談ですが、このアルバムはアメリカで「年間ベストパッケージ賞」を取ったらしいのですが、なんのことか解らず調べてみると、デザインのいいアルバムの「ケース」に贈られる賞らしいです。確かにこのケースはそれだけ飾っておいても作品になるくらいのいい出来ですが、音楽とは関係ありません。惑わされないように気を付けて下さい。
