名盤ハッシュ、そして詩人タリエシンの世界、とロッド エバンスの甘い声にジョンのキーボードとリッチーのギターが絡み付く売れ線を意識した、優れたポップスロックを産み出したパープルですが、ここではジョン ロード主導の売れるという事を意識せずロックとオーケストラの融合を実験的に試みた完璧なアート ロック アルバムとして、プログレマニアには評価の高い作品です。しかし一般的なパープルマニアからは意味のわからんジャケット、ヒット曲が無い、控え目なリッチーとかなり不当な評価を受けています。さすがのリッチーも不満だったらしく半年後のロックとオーケストラの共演盤ロイヤル フィル ハーモニック オーケストラではリッチー全開最高のソロを弾きまくって不満を解消しています。このアルバムは全ての人にはお勧めしません。アートロック、プログレファンやジョンロードファン、私のようにアルバム ロイヤル フィルハーモニックを高く評価している人向けです。
