　マガロフといえば、ショパンの全曲集をフィリップスに残したスペシャリストであり、派手な弾き方をせず、曲そのものが持つ魅力を最大限に引き出すような演奏を聞かせてくれることで名を馳せた。1991年に録音されたこのＣＤは年代こそ違うものの、基本的な部分はこの路線をはずしていない。

　前奏曲集について言うと、際立つのはやはりそのシンプルさだろう。有名な「雨だれ」だけを比べても、速めのテンポと静かさを保った演奏で、水が流れる音を聞いているような印象を受ける。また、一方のソナタではじっくり構えたテンポと重みを含ませた響きで、濃厚な演奏を聞かせてくれる。しかししつこさや派手さはなく、あくまでも楽譜にかかれたことを守りながら、曲の魅力を最大限引き出している。
　マガロフは録音の翌年に亡くなっている。この録音はさすがに80歳を目前に控えて技巧的な衰えが見えるものの、それを補って余りある円熟と優美さを持っている。ショパン演奏最高峰のひとつに数えられるだろう。

年齢的なものもあるのだろうが、とにかく落ち着いた演奏だ。特にピアノ・ソナタ第3番は絶品。80歳になるが、全く衰えていないマガロフに脱帽。

最後に収録されているショパンの「ピアノソナタ第三番　第四楽章」が素晴らしかった。これは亡くなる前年の日本録音とのこと。さて、どこがよかったのか？「ピアノソナタ第三番　第四楽章」は、同じフレーズが繰り返し登場する。老ピアニストは、調子を変えながら「同じフレーズを繰り返し弾く」という作業の中で、自身がたどってきた道を振り返り、反芻する。アルバムのジャケット写真、右手を高らかに上げる姿は、老ピアニストの最後の煌きであると同時に、すべてを達観した男の最期の雄姿だ。ブックレットにマガロフはピアノの教師、、、後進の育成に熱心、、、と書いてあるが、いわゆる「教師」・「教育」という言葉の持つ退屈さはまったくない。「刷り込み」という言葉をご存知だろうか？クラシックは、初めに聴いた演奏が自身の判断基準となってしまう傾向に陥りやすい。自分は、ショパンのピアノソナタ第三番は、初めて聞いたのがマガノフで本当によかった。というのは、その後アルゲリッチの１９６５年度版を聞いたのだが、まったく印象に残らなかったからである。
