　「音楽は国境を越える」とはよく言ったもので、名演・名盤の生まれる背景に国境や国籍は関係ない。しかし、この曲について言えばチェコの指揮者・チェコのオーケストラ以上の組み合わせというのはなかなか見つけることができない。やはり「真摯な思いが名演を生み出す」ということなのだろう。
　この曲の歴史的な名盤としては、ヴァーツラフ・ターリヒやカレル・アンチェルのものがあげられる。それぞれＳＰ・ＬＰ時代の名演だが、おそらくこれらに伍すほどの名演として数えられるのが、このスメターチェクによるものだろう。
　演奏はさきに挙げた２つよりも多少勢いを押さえている感があるが、スメターチェクのものは各フレーズの唄い方・押さえ方が絶妙で、表現の細かさでは群を抜いている。その表現に対する気配りが冒頭部から最後まで一貫されていて、他に類を見ない全６曲のまとまりの良さを作りあげているのも、また凄い。

CDが登場した当時の、デジタル録音初期の名盤!「わが祖国」の録音といえば、クーベリックの違うオケとの数種類の録音、特に最後のチェコフィルとのライヴ盤は感動的です!他にもアンチェルの迫力ある演奏、ターリヒ、ノイマンなどチェコ出身の指揮者に名盤が多いが、私はチェコフィルで、チェコ出身の指揮者のものでは、スメターチェクの演奏が深く感銘を受けました!とにかく全編にわたり整然としていてバランスが良い!激しく感情を爆発させる箇所でも、決してオーバーにならず抑制が利いており、「ボヘミアの森と草原より」のような美しい佇まいを聴かせる曲ではスメターチェクの本領発揮で、絶妙な指揮が聴けます!「モルダウ」の過剰にならない端正な表現は実にお見事!チェコ出身以外の指揮者にも名盤はあると思いますが(マタチッチ、ドラティ等)私は本場物のスメターチェクをお薦めします。彼は録音もかなりあるらしいのですが、日本ではあまり発売されずにチェコ出身指揮者では目立たない存在になっていますが、この演奏を聴くかぎり相当な実力の持ち主と感じました!残念ながら亡くなってしまいましたが、彼の代表的な名盤として価格も安価ですし多くの方に聴いて欲しい名盤です!

あらー、スメターチェク70代半ば、「チェコのカラヤン」と呼ばれたらしいが、ほれは失礼に当たるくらいもの凄い「わが祖国」。レッド・ツェッペリンのジョンポールジョーンズがビートルズの2大天才を名前に包含するなら、この巨匠は、チェコの大作曲家を名前に包含するかのようなお名前やし。

これまで、クーベリック（引退後のチェコフィル、ボストン、亡命前のウィーンフィル）、ノイマン（チェコフィルの上野ライブ）と聴きましたが、有意にこの巨匠たちの上をゆく演奏ですわな。フルトヴェングラーの魔弾の射手序曲の演奏など、ほんまちょろいもんやと思う位、もの凄い盤です。ややゆったりとしたテンポで、スケール感がごつい。ノイマンのライブでの後半の燃え尽き度との好みの比較になりますけども、本盤では、ぐいぐい引っ張ってゆくようなヴィシェフラト、硬い絆と確かな信念に基づく人間性の讃歌のごときタボール、ブラニーク。果たして、これより深い感動をもつ演奏があるのかどうか、訊きたいです
