   けばけばしく両性具有的なプラシーボの音楽においては、セックス、ドラッグ、ロックン・ロールが際立って重要な役割を演じてきた。『Sleeping With Ghosts』は、それまでのアルバムと比べると多少おとなしい内容で、体液の交換のことよりも、人間関係にまつわる歪んだ心理学的な側面がテーマとなっている。とはいえ、フェティシズムの入りこむ余地がまったくないわけではない。たとえば「This Picture」は、明らかにサド・マゾヒズムについて歌ったもので、かつてスエードがやっていたようなトラッシュ・グラム・ポップの匂いをふりまきながらスタートする。「The Bitter End」――“僕らの感覚はすっかり麻痺してしまったから（Since we're feeling so anaesthetized）”――は、傑出していて、凶暴で、宿命論的な視点でつづられたロックな曲だ。ブライアン・モルコは、明らかに天気のくだらない話題にうんざりしているし（シラけた「English Summer Rain」は、リズミックでエレクトロニックな衝撃音に導かれた抑え目のポップ・チューン）、ドアーズの影響が見られる4分の3拍子の「Protect Me from What I Want」では、誘惑から自分を引き離してくれと祈ってもいるのだが、本作で打ち出したテーマが彼に似合っていないのか、それともテーマに魅入られるあまり変な方向に行ってしまったのか分からなくなるようなところが時々ある。とはいえ『Sleeping With Ghosts』は、毎晩スラムダンスが繰り広げられるゴス系クラブで聴いても精神分析医のカウチで聴いても充分に楽しめるアルバムとなっている。（Kevin Maidment, Amazon.com）

デビッド・ボウイに見出され、
グラムロックを継承するような
退廃美と妖艶なサウンドを核にしてきた彼らだが、
なぜかジャケットは、そういうイメージを
踏襲してこなかった。
だが、この4thアルバムにして始めて
艶めかしく、セクシーでショッキングなジャケットで
ストレートにイメージを伝えてきた。

ある意味、グラムロック的であることに

吹っ切れた感がある。
それは、サウンドにも顕著だ。
極めてUK的なストレートなロックをやっている。
奇をてらっていないところが逆に
ブライアン・モルコの妖艶さを際立たせ、
ダークで深みのあるグルーヴ感を
生み出しているように感じる。

そしてソングライティングの進化と
サウンドの完成度に改めて気づく。

もうグラム・ヒーローにこだわりは無いはずだ。
自分たちの追求する表現の中に
十分、華と毒と美しさがあるのだから。

メロディは優しげながら鋭く、色々な形態のバンド（ド・ポップからデス〜ブラックメタルまで）聴くが、この両方が1曲の中で凝縮され、これ程渾然一体化したバンドをわたしは知らない。どの曲を聴いても｢あっ、Placeboだ!!｣と判る個性は相変わらずで、聴き終わっても何故かその音の残像が頭をグルグルと廻る不思議な存在。コンスタントに音源を提供してくれるファン思いのバンド、という点も評価に値するだろう。
