   ワシントン・ポスト紙の記者ジョン（リチャード・ギア）は妻メアリーと幸せな日々を送っていたが、突如の交通事故で彼女は死亡。しかしその際、彼女は謎の言葉を遺した。それから2年後、ジョンは見知らぬ町で不思議な事件に次々と遭遇し、やがてメアリーの死に繋がる手掛かりを発見する…。
   全米で実際に起きた不可解な超常現象事件をヒントに記された原作を元に『隣人は静かに笑う』のマーク・ペリントン監督が描く怪奇スリラー映画。ミステリ仕立てなのであまり詳細は書けないし、知らずに観た方がアッと怖がることができる。ラストは賛否分かれるだろうが、そこに至るまでの繊細な映像美に酔いしれればこちらのものか。仏教徒リチャード・ギアが出演するだけのテーマの映画ともいえるが、老けてなお魅力が増すばかりの彼の演技が一番良い。（的田也寸志）

すべてのエピソードが本当に実話なら驚きです。　いわゆる超常現象ものです
ので、すべてに理屈があわないと気がすまない人には向いてません。　素直に
驚いてみたい人向けです。

見えない、しかし確実に迫り来る「何者か」に翻弄されながら、ひとり、またひとりと姿を消されていく恐怖感の中、静寂とともにストーリーが展開していく。常軌を逸した超常現象に立ち向かう、リチャード・ギアの抑揚の効いた演技が光る。ジャンル分けの難しいテーマだが実話を元にした点で、過去に公開された超常現象ホラー「エンティティー　霊体」などの同一線上にある作品かもしれない。よってラストシーンは、リチャード・ギアの挑んだ「何者か」への挑戦の結果として受け止めれば理解できるだろう。また、視覚的に残虐なシーンが少ないことも、上品な印象を強めている。

Mothmanとは何かというのが最初から気になっていましたが、姿を現さず、Mothmanの視点からの映像が何度か出てくるのが恐怖感を高める手法のように思えました。超常現象というよりはホラー映画に近い印象があります。Mothmanが電話をかけてきて、どこから見ているのか分からないが、こちらの様子はすべて筒抜け。しかし、明かりをすべて消しても、手元にあった本をランダムに開いて、何ページのどこには何が書いてあるかと聞いても何もかもすべてをお見通しで、最悪の相手に目を付けられているという絶望感にさいなまれます。未来に起きる悲劇を予測してきても、どうにも防げない所がさらに絶望感を加速します。

最後の橋のシーンは実に迫力があります。そんなことが起きていいのか？と思いますが、実話だということらしいです。リチャードギアの名演が光っていると思います。
