マリア・マッキーの7年ぶりのニューアルバム。もともとカントリーが自分のルーツなのに、わざとそれを振り払うようなアルバムを作ったか思えば、またカントリーに戻ってきたりと揺れ動いていたマリア。今回は、そんな迷いはなくなったかのようにリラックスして歌っています。

おそらくこのアルバムも商業的には結構厳しいでしょうが、私みたいにローン・ジャスティスのファーストアルバムの感動が忘れられない人にとっては、マリアの声が聞けるだけでも幸せなのではないでしょうか？
ただディクシー・チックスとかヒットしている中、もう一度コテコテのカントリー･アルバムを作って欲しい気もしますね。

ああジャケット見ると年とったなあと思うけど、ローンジャスティスから18年、私の中でロック史上最大の美人にしてジャニス直系の王道ロックヴォーカリストマリアの新作。今も鮮明に覚えているさ93年来日ライヴの素晴らしい演奏と客の女の子も「可愛い･･･」と息をのんだ美しさ。（本当にお人形さんのようだった）
あまりにもアメリカンロックにStraight into the heartしすぎたためにさっぱり売れず伝説のバンドになってしまったローンジャスティスだったけど、ソロになってからの彼女も相変わらず質の高い作品を生み続けている。孤高の雰囲気（＝売れない）も相変わらずだけど。前作Life is sweetがちょっとサウンドの作りこみが勝っておどろおどろしい雰囲気さえ漂っていたが、今回も結構作り子もまれてはいるものの、タイトル曲の再演（ずっと良い出来）も含め、曲の良さを損なうこともなくいいバランスになっている。

ロックは売れるにこしたことのない音楽ではあるが、ロック者として基本的な栄養として米のように長く聞き続けたいものもある。これはそういう音だ。

5.0 out of 5 stars またマリアのライヴが見たくなってしまうアルバム, 2004/5/21
前作からもう7年もたったのですね。アルタナ系の音づくりに走って驚かされたけれど、今回は溜め込んできたものを気持ちよく吐き出したって感じで、マリア本来のちょっと斜めに構えたポップロッカーとしての姿が充分に感じられるアルバムに仕上がっています。ブロンドだったヘアはいつのまにか黒くなっているもののその美しさは変わりなく、時に穏やかささえみせるヴォーカルは、1993年にクラブクアトロでみたライヴでのラフなスタイル(これもよかったのだが)からの、歳月の流れと確かな成長を感じさせてくれます。ホーンの大げさなアレンジは気になるが、これが同じ曲なのかと思える｢Life is sweet｣の再演など、粒揃いの14曲です。

中ジャケに引用された作家Jサーバーの一文｢人は何処から来て何処を目指し何のために生きるのかを学び続けなければならない｣は、このアルバムのコンセプトそのものですが、きっと彼女の座右の銘に違いないでしょう。
