もしライル・ラヴェットのオリジナル・ソングを収めたアルバム（1996年の『Road to Ensenada』）がリリースされてからそれほど間が空いていなければ、『Smile』は実際以上に価値あるアルバムと感じられたのではないだろうか。いい曲がないわけではない。しかし、ラヴェットお気に入りのテキサスのシンガー・ソングライターに捧げられた1998年の『Step Inside This House』と同様、『Smile』を聴いていると、もっとオリジナル曲を聴きたいのに、と思えて仕方ないのだ。
本作のコンセプトはシンプルそのもの。ラヴェットは1992年からさまざまな映画のためにレコーディングしているが、その中から12曲を選び、1枚のディスクにまとめてある。大ヒット曲「You've Got a Friend in Me」は、『トイ・ストーリー』の主題歌で、ランディ・ニューマンとのデュエットだ。本作中もっとも多くの人々に親しまれている曲だろう。それに続くのが、『スチュアート・リトル』からの曲で、バート・バカラックとティム・ライスによるせつない「Walking Tall」。だが、さらにすばらしいのは、これまでさほど話題にならなかった曲だ。たとえば、1994年の『奇跡を呼ぶ男』からのゴスペル・スタンダード「Pass Me Not」や、ゲイリー・マーシャル監督による1996年のコメディ『Mr.ポストマン 私は夢の配達人』からのナット・キング・コールの「Straighten Up and Fly Right」など。また、ラヴェットがチェット・ベイカーばりの歌声を聴かせるアーヴィング・バーリンの「Blue Skies」（1994年の『きっと忘れない』より）は、このテキサスの吟遊詩人が世間で言われている以上に多芸多才であることを証明している。『Smile』は、ラヴェットの最高のオリジナル・アルバムと同列に評価するわけにはいかないにせよ、余興として存分に楽しませてくれる。（David Hill, Amazon.com）
