デニス・ブレインは若くして才能を認められた夭折の天才ホルン奏者というのが定説で、現にこのCDはレコード芸術のモーツァルトのホルン協奏曲集のランキングでもずっと一位を獲得し続けている名盤である。

ホルンほどの難しい楽器であれほど歌いまわせるのはブレイン以外にはだれもいないであろう。もう録音が古くなっていて明瞭な音が聞けないのは残念ではあるが、それを補うだけの価値は秘めていると思わせる名演である。
ただ、伝統的な解釈に飽きた人には退屈かもしれない。

これを買った時は、単にカラヤンの名前にひかれて買ったのですが、（恥ずかしながらブレインと言う人を知りませんでした。汗）

でも、これを聴いて「ホルンって、いい楽器だなー！」、と思える演奏でした。ホルン奏者の家系に生まれ、若くしてベルリンフィルの主席ホルン奏者になったブレインの名演奏だと思います。（残念ながら自動車事故で若くして亡くなられたそうです。）
これからホルンを聴いてみようと思われる方に是非お勧めしたいCDです。

カラヤンは２種類のモーツァルトのホルン協奏曲全集を録音しています。２つとも名盤として知られています。後のザイフェルト、ベルリン・フィルとの録音は非常に豪華でしなやかな演奏です。この録音で注目すべき点は個性的な若い２人の天才、つまり、ブレインとカラヤンです。ブレインはホルンを、カラヤンはフィルハ-モニア管弦楽団をそれぞれ若さのかぎりぶつけあっています。それにしても、ブレインの非常に堂々とした、余裕すら感じる演奏を聞くと改めてこの若い天才奏者の実力がよくわかります。
