   フランス映画界の巨匠ジャン・ルノワール監督の代表作の1本だが、我が国では製作後43年を経て、復元された完全版が公開された。『ゲームの規則』というタイトルは、ルノワールによれば「人が社会生活の中で―その中で押しつぶされまいとする限り―守らなければならない規則」とのこと。　大西洋を23時間で横断した飛行家アンドレ、その彼が想うラ・シュネイ公爵夫人クリスチーヌ、夫ロベールと愛人ジュヌヴィエーヴ、ジュリユーの親友でクリスチーヌの幼なじみであるオクターヴ（ジャン・ルノワール）といった面々がコリニエールを舞台に、恋愛騒動を繰り広げる。　堅苦しそうな印象を受けるモノクロ映画だが、実はいつの時代も変わらない、惚れたハレたの騒ぎを描いた、すこぶる楽しいラブコメディ。上流階級が登場する作品ゆえ、豪華なセット、華麗な衣装など見どころは少なくない。（斉藤守彦）

ルノワールの大傑作、もちろんそのことに依存はありませんが、このDVD版、大切なワンカットが削除されております。冒頭近く、マルセル･ダリオがガウンを着たまま部屋の中を移動カメラに向かって歩いてくるシーンがあったはずなのですが、そこが丸々削除されております。そのカットは移動するダリオを中心に据えて、女中さんや執事さんや大勢の人が入れ替わり立ち代り入っては出て行く長回しをワンカットで捕らえたとても驚きのシーンなのです。何故そのカットがないのか不思議です。

単なる批評家ウケのつまんねぇ古典作品だろ？・・・なんて偏見は捨てて下さい。しっかり通俗してます。群像劇はどこに注目したらいいのか解んねぇから嫌いだよなどと仰有る人でも大丈夫。個々のキャラクターがきっちり描き分けられているので観客に過度の集中力を強いることもありません。不当に神棚に奉り上げられてしまっているこの作品を、今こそ民衆の手に！

ゲームの規則は真底から悲劇的な映画で、苦しくて予言的な虐殺のゲームです。
ここでは友情さえもが神話的に仕立てられており、ラ・シェスネイがジュリューに向かって共通の友人であるオクターブの事に触れながら

「僕はもう殆ど何も信じていない。でもこれからは友情だけは信じようと思う。」

と打ち明けている丁度その時、当のオクターブは彼らから彼らが愛している女を奪い取る準備をしています。

うつろな骸骨とでも形容すべきこの映画の出演者たちは、五感を強く刺激する死の舞踏を選んでいます。
