 「悪魔のバイブル」とも称されたウィリアム・ヒューツバックの小説を、鬼才アラン・パーカー監督が映画化したオカルト・スリラー巨編。1955年のブルックリン、私立探偵ハリー（ミッキー・ローク）は、ある日謎の紳士サイファー（ロバート・デ・ニーロ）から、失踪した歌手ジョニーを探してくれとの依頼を受ける。しかし、その調査の過程で次々と殺人事件が起きていき…。
   前半はロークの柄をいかしながらのハードボイルド・タッチで進んでいき、後半へ進むに従い、恐怖のモチーフが徐々に首をもたげてくる構成がおもしろい。エレベーターを象徴的に用いた演出など、映像的にも見るべきところは多いが、一番の見どころはやはり出番こそ多くはないがデ・ニーロの悪魔的怪演だろう。（的田也寸志）

一人称（主人公の視点で物語が進む）ならではのオチ。
この映画の後に、この種のオチが連発された気がします。

初めて、このオチを観た人は衝撃を受けるかもしれません。
ただ、このDVDのメニュー画面にはクライマックスの画像が‥
最初は、メニューを見ないで、いきなり本編を観てください。

出演している役者さんが素晴らしいので、引き込まれますよ。

繰り返し見る映画です。サスペンスミステリー映画の傑作ですが、
完成度の高い映画で、物語の展開、構成が抜群です。恐怖の描き方が
秀逸で、どんどん追い詰められていく主人公ハリーの様が鬼気迫り
ます。主演のミッキー・ロークがはまり役で、とにかくいい味だして
ます。ロバート・デニーロも迫力あります。ミステリー好きはもちろ
んお薦めですが、単に謎解きミステリーではない奥の深さを感じさせ
る映像美、少し昔の映画ですが、若い人に見てもらいたいと思います。

まだミッキーロークが落ちぶれる前の絶大な人気を博したころの作品。この頃の時代設定としてはギャングが多いのに対して、宗教がらみの探偵サスペンス。終盤にはつじつまの合わないシックスセンスとは大違いのどんでん返しがあり、繰り返し観たい映画。2回目からはなるほどと納得する場面も多々...
