ドン・シーゲルが監督、ジョン・ウェインの遺作となった西部劇をDVD化。20世紀始めのネバダ州で、末期ガンを告知された老ガンマン・ブックスは夫人と最期の日々を過ごそうとするが、町中に知れ渡り、彼はガンマンとして死ぬことを決意する…。

5.0 out of 5 stars いろんな意味で大胆かつ繊細な映画, 2002/12/28
　若き日に、一発の銃声と共にライフルをクルッと廻し駅馬車を止めたその瞬間、新しい伝説を誕生させた男が、フォード亡き後、一人守った伝説に決着をつけ、新たなるウエスタンへの、伝説へのバトンタッチにと最後選んだ役が、自身とおなじ余命わずかな伝説の男。

　その最後の一週間を実に淡々と枯れた味わいで見せるドン・シーゲル監督。ウェイン本人ほか名優陣も、ここでは全ての人が病気の事を知りながら創り上げたという美しい結晶の成果。決して「遺作」だから感動的なのではないが、最期までスターとしての肉体をスクリーンに刻印した男の生きざまを切り離せるはずがない。

ジョン・ウェインの最後の映画。
年取った癌患者。
このガンマンは、どう死んでいくのか。
かれは、銃撃戦を死の舞台に選んだ。
奇妙な西部劇。
良い映画。見せ場はたっぷり。
ジョン・ウェインは1907~1978。71歳、癌で死んだ。死の前の年に作った映画。立派。

　ジョン・ウェインの晩年に撮られた作品である、病魔に侵された老ガンマンの人生最後の決着の着け方を描いた秀作。
　冒頭、過去のウェインのフィルムの名場面のダイジェストが流れる。この老ガンマンの過去を若い役者を使って撮るのではなく、ジョン・ウェイン自身の出演作品から抜粋している時点で見ている側は嫌でもジョン・ウェインの遺作であることを意識せざるを得ない。監督はアクション映画の名手ドン・シーゲルだが、珍しく抑えた描写で、それが逆に見る者に静かな感動を呼ぶ。ジョン・ウェインの枯れた名演に、ジャームズ・スチュワートやローレン・バコールなど大物ゲストの出演も嬉しい。
　余談だが、当時の日本の配給会社がジョン・ウェインの死を待って公開するという、映画ファンの心理を逆なでするような営利主義丸出しの姿勢で、そのためかどうか劇場公開ではヒットしなかった記憶がある。
