ジェリー・ゴールドスミスのキャリア上の問題というだけでなく、映画音楽の歴史の上でも文句なく最高峰の一つに上げられる最良の仕事。当時流行始めていた電子音楽の使用を極力抑え、生楽器の特殊奏法、及び民族楽器の導入で、異文化世界の音色を創案。最も驚くべきは、十二音の手法に乗っ取った前衛音楽のスタイルを随所に織り込みながら、娯楽性豊かにアクションとＳＦ世界の雰囲気を演出していることだ。そんな離れ業はこれまでにもあまり例は見ない。ゴールドスミスは作曲当時38歳。この仕事でアカデミー賞作曲賞の候補に挙がっている。なお、この日本版ＣＤには、録音日の初日の日付もライナーノートに記載されている。20世紀フォックスの資料にも消えかけている歴史的記録を知る意味でも、買う価値が大きい一枚だ。なお、ディスクにはシリーズ第１作の「猿の惑星」だけでなく、第３作「新・猿の惑星」の音楽も組曲形式で収録されている。
