1971年リリースの中期「YES」の大きな転機になった傑作。彼らの最初の黄金期を飾るメンバーは、ご存知Chris Squire、Jon Anderson、Steve Howe、Bill Bruford、Rick Wakeman。特にキーボードがトニー・ケイからウェイクマンにチェンジしたことによって楽曲全体がよりシンフォニックによりテクニカルになったことが特筆されます。

恥かしながらこれまで旧規格のCDを聴いていた私の耳にとって、このリマスター盤から沸き出てくる音の洪水は大変新鮮で、大袈裟に表現すればまるで新譜を聴いているような思いです。音圧が上がりまた分離が明確になったことは当然ですが、やや高音を強調した感がします。旧規格ではうっかり聴き逃していた音まで耳に飛び込んできます。話題のボーナストラックは、S&Gの「America」と名曲「Roundabout」のアウトテイク。特に加工前といった感じの「Roundabout」は興味深いものがあります。ただこの2曲はあくまでも「おまけ」であって、やはり生まれ変わった本編に集中して耳を傾けてみてください。

アナログ時代からのファンはもちろん、旧規格で歯がゆい思いをしてきた人は、間違いなく「買い」です。またまだ「YES」を聴いたことがない若い世代にとって、1971年という時代に、こんな素晴らしい音楽をプレイしていた彼らに触れることができる「格好の入門編」としてお勧めします。豪華ブックレットも嬉しいプレゼントという感じですね。

ああ、また再発かあ、とおもいきや、今回は気合い入ってる！凄いぞライノ！よくあるリマスター再発だけど、これは大成功と思います。こうなるとアナログ時代のしかも再発盤から始めた私のフラジャイル歴もこれで終着かも。リアルだなあ、このベースのガリガリ感とモタったブラッフォードのドラムのタイム感。変な組み合わせなんだけど、いい味のワン・アンド・オンリーを作り出してる。プログレ入門盤に最適ですね、これは。当初から散漫という評価でしたが、現在の耳には、それがいい方向に作用している気がします。ボーナス・トラックはマニア以外あんまし効き目、ないかな。

日本国伝統の紙ジャケットとは異なるが三つ折りデジパック仕様。オリジナルブックレットの完全な再現に加えて、Bill Martinによるライナーノーツに歌詞付き。ロジャー・ディーンのアートワークも、このパッケージなら浮かばれようというもの。リマスタリングされた音は、70年代のバンドサウンドに相応しく、数値的な情報量よりもライブ感のある音像とざっくりした切れの良さを重視し、名より実質を取ったかのような手堅い出来のCDに仕上がっていると思う。ボーナストラックはファンにはすっかりおなじみの"America"に、スタジオライブ感覚で結構面白いラフミックス版の"Roundabout"。音楽的にはもう何も言うことはないが、久しぶりに聴いてみて、例えばオーケストラの弦のパートをエレピで置き換えたリック・ウェイクマンの"Cans and Brahms"のアレンジの巧みさに感心させられた(ストリングス系のシンセ音などにしてしまうと凡庸この上ないところである）。さすがだ。夢見るような生ギターソロの"Mood for a day"が終わり、突如炸裂する"Heart of the sunrise"のイントロ。その間隙に息づく一瞬の静寂に、このアルバムの語り得ない美しさが集約されているように思う。
