人が生きていく中で絶対必要な活動である「食」について日本人はグルメ、美食などと表面的な「食」の発展（食文化の発展）はめざましい。
しかし、日本人は肉食文化の歴史が浅く、肉を食べるために必ず行なう屠殺などを考えてもおらず、スーパーに並んでしまっており、命の代価を考える機会が少ないように思われる。
このDVDでは、あるドイツの農家が自ら育ててきた豚を屠殺し、無駄なく、手際良くベーコン、ソーセージにしていく姿を映している。
その作業光景を、豚を育てて来たであろう農家の少女もごく自然に受け入れて見ている。
教育って、こういうことじゃないのかな？
死により、生を授かると直接訴えかけられる。
生命のサイクルが見えなくなった現在の日本、パッケージされた食べ物による弊害。
子供だけでなく、今の日本に必要な何かを感じるはず。

最初はここまでのめりこんで見てしまうとは思ってもいませんでした。
見ていくうちに自分の今の生活を思い直したり、食べるという事について深く考えていくようになりました。

豚をさばく姿も最初はビビってしまいましたが、途中からとても綺麗なものを見ているような感じで引き込まれ、4歳になったばかりの子供も何かしら感じるものがあったようです。

これから大きくなるにつれて度々見せてやりたいと思います。
また自分の生活を見直すためにも本当に良い作品だと思います。

食の原点を辿るというコンセプトで、人間の食について切り込んでいる本作品は、十年以上前に制作されたものとは思えないほど鮮烈な印象を与えます。各種動物が並ぶヨーロッパの食肉市場や、生きている豚を屠殺するシーンは、食糧生産の場から切り離されてしまった私たちにとってショッキングなものではありますが、肉を食べることは命を食べることに等しいのだということを教えてくれます。こればっかりは口でいうよりこのDVDを見たほうが何倍も強く、かつダイレクトに理解できるとおもいます。

内容が濃く非常に面白いのですが、最初に全体のダイジェスト版が入っているので、重複してしまうシーンがいくつかあります。見ていてもったいないなと思いました（私の場合、重複シーンが多いと油断して集中力が逸れてしまうので…）。削ってもいいんじゃないかしら？と思いました。学校の授業用にはダイジェストはピッタリだと思うんですが。
