　歴史的有名作品にしてイギリス映画の名作。しかし、ここでは本ＤＶＤ版の画質について書きます。本作はテクニカラーの代名詞とも言うべき名キャメラマン、ジャック・カーディフの代表作ですが、テクニカラーの色は、これまではビデオ、ＤＶＤで本来の色合いが再現されることはまれでした。これは、マスターとして退色したプリントを使わざるをえない事情がありました。そこで、ＤＶＤ化の際には、こうしたマスターにデジタルリマスター処理を施すのですが、デジタルリマスターでは、正しくテクニカラーの色を再現する技術が確立されておらず、結果はいずれも不満の残るものでした。キズや汚れはなくなっても色がダメ。赤が艶を欠き平面的で、人の肌や髪はべったりした感触で粉っぽい。
　しかし、このＤＶＤのテクニカラー、これは本物です！赤は鮮明、人の肌や髪の毛にも艶がある。発色の強さ、メタリックな艶があり、にもかかわらず透明感がある。そうしたテクニカラーの美点がすべて再現されていました。いったい、どんな技術を使ったのか？
　発売元がＩＶＣということで画質に不安を持っている方、それは杞憂です。また、数年前にＴＶ放送された本作を観た方、ＴＶ放送された版と本ＤＶＤでは画質に雲泥の差があります。本ＤＶＤで観直してください。それだけの値打ちがあります。

　一度TVで見て、ようやく再開できた。
とんでもない話を理屈っぽく、英国風ユーモアで語る、ファンタジー。
英国人の米人や仏人への視線が可笑しい。

「８０日間世界一周」のデビッド・ニーヴン、「欲望という名の電車」のキム・ハンター主演。天国は白黒、地上はカラーという撮影も美しい。４０年間生きてきたなかでベスト映画。和田誠氏の「お楽しみはこれからだ」にも採用されている。
