   あまりジャズに親しみのない人は、白人ジャズ、黒人ジャズという言い方に、差別的なニュアンスを感じるかもしれない。しかしそれは誤解で、現実に演奏する人種により出てくるサウンドに顕著な違いがあることから、慣習的に行われている区別なのだ。 アート・ペッパーは、代表的な白人アルト奏者である。しかし、単に白人的な薄口で淡白なサウンドではなく、黒人ジャズにも通じる粘りのある表現ができる、優れた演奏者なのだ。そのペッパーが、全員黒人であるマイルス・デイヴィスのサイドマンたちと共演したのが、このアルバムである。当代一流のメンバーたちを相手に、臨時編成のバンドとは思えない、完成された演奏を見せている。また、このアルバムは録音が優れているところから、オーディオファンが必ず持っていることでも有名だ。（後藤雅洋）

録音の良さで知られるコンテンポラリー･レコードの不世出の録音技師ロイ・デュナンの手によるもの。西海岸を感じさせるリアルでクリアな音質に驚ろかされるばかりだ。高出力アンプにJBLスピ-カーなどのよい音源で聞くと、その臨場感に圧倒される。また、オーナーのレスター・ケーニヒの肝いりで急遽決まったというセッションは、当事No.1といわれた一糸乱れぬマイルスのリズム・セクション＋ウエスト･コーストを代表する天才肌のアルト、アート・ペッパーという千載一遇の顔合わせだ。のっけからYou'd Be So Nice To Come Home Toの名演一発で、しびれてしまう。すでに麻薬付けといわれていたペッパーだが、信じられないようなすばらしいプレイを聞かせ、生涯の最高傑作をものにしてしまった。同じく60年2月にコンテンポラリーに残したGettin' Togetherは当時マイルスのリズム隊のP・チェンバース、ウイントン・ケリー、ジミー・コブによるもので2匹目のドジョウをねらった感があるが、リズム隊の差という以上に、時代を経ことによるペッパー自身のイマジネーションの不足、体調不良によるダウン現象が如実に現れ、おまけに悲しいかなアルバムジャケットに映し出されたペッパーの美貌やデザインも含め比較にならない出来である。70年代に一度復活をはたしたものの、やはりペッパーのベストは50年代であろう。

超有名ジャズメンには「この一曲」がある。コルトレーンだったら「マイ・フェーバリット・シングス」。マイルスやビル・エヴァンスのように、「この一曲」が複数あるミュージシャンはスーパースター。で、アート・ペッパーは「ベサメ・ムーチョ」などもあるが、やはりこのアルバムの一曲目の「ユード・ビー・ソー・ナイス・・・」だろう。ヘレン・メリルのヴォーカルでのこの曲もいいけど、アルト・サックスでは、このペッパーの一曲で決まりだ。「ストレート・ライフ」など、このアルバムには佳曲も多いが、やはり聴き物は一曲目。情緒的なペッパー、日本人のジャズファンのために生まれてきた。と、夢想したくなる。いつでも聴きたい、いつまでも持っていたい一枚。１９５９年の録音だが、録音、音源がいいので、ＸＲＣＤ２４ビットではとても５０年前の録音とは思えないほど音がいい。
