懐かしさに誘われて購入したＣＤですが、カレン・カ-ペンタ-が亡くなって既に２０年も経つことに改めて驚きました。カ-ペンタ-ズの歌声は今でもＣＭ等で使われて、身近な存在感があるだけに時が過ぎる早さに唖然とします。

拒食症という今風の病気が死を招く病であることを初めて知ったのもカレンのときでした。

ＤＶＤでカレンの歌声を映像とともに観られるのがこのＣＤの最大の特徴です。当時の自分と重ねあわせて観ても良し、カ-ペンタ-ズを知らない人もこのＤＶＤでカ-ペンタ-ズの温かみを感じられると思います。

このアルバムは、カーペンターズのベスト中のベストである。
カーペンター兄弟は、兄のリチャードのアレンジャーのセンスの良さといい、カレンの美しすぎるヴォーカルのコラボレイトがたまらなく良いのである。

今回、このアルバムの発売で嬉しいのが、DVDがセットであるところです。カーペンターズの60年代から80年代初頭の映像が見られるのが大変満足のいくベスト・アルバムであると思うのである。このDVDの中で、イギリスのテレビ番組に出演している所がなかなか興味深いことです。

私が、カーペンターズの中で一番好きな曲は、「クローズ・トゥ・ユー」という曲で、最後のハーモニーが綺麗な所が気に入っています。

95年にTBSドラマ『未成年』のエンディング・テーマに「青春の輝き」、オープニング・テーマに「トップ・オブ・ザ・ワールド」が使用され、カーペンターズの人気が再燃しました。そのさいに、『青春の輝き~ベスト・オブ・カーペンターズ』が日本国内の独自編集盤ベストとして発売されました。このCDは、そのスペシャル・エディションです。ですから、ジャケットのカーペンターズの写真はすでに発売されたものと同じです。

CD自体の選曲について言うと、やはり日本編集盤だけあって、日本で暮らしてきた人間にとっては、全22曲のうち半分は聞き覚えがあります。カーペンターズのベストのなかでもベストである、と言ってよいでしょう。

Cubic U（宇多田ヒカル）が“Close to You（遥かなる影）”をカヴァーしたことも示すように、カーペンターズの曲自体が洋楽のスタンダード・ナンバー、忘れた頃に絶対に聴きたくなる曲ですから、ぜひともおさえておきたいところです。

発売日には、日本でのコマーシャル・ソングまでを含んだ本格的な四枚組「エッセンシャル・コレクション・ボックス」日本盤が発売されますが、購入者にカーペンターズと同時代を生きたという思い入れがなければこっちだけで十分だ、と思います。
