ベートーヴェンの第4番交響曲は、どちらかといえば本来地味な存在ですが、
この録音を聴く限りそれはあっさりと否定されてしまうはずです。
クライバー特有の“揺らぎ”を伴ったテンポアップ＆ダウン。
両者が絶妙に上手くかみ合っており、聴き終えた後には
さわやかな春風のような感覚に見舞われます。
各パートの細かいミストーンなんて何のその。
彼の5・7番と共に生涯聞き続けるであろう名盤です。
近年世界中でこの4番の演奏回数が多くなったのも、このクライバー盤の影響が
大きいですし、 この盤と双璧なのはムラヴィンスキー盤（来日ライヴ）くらいでしょう。

ブルーノ・ワルターの優美で美しい響きの４番が好きだった。だから、ベートーベンの奇数番号の交響曲を振るクライバーは格好いいだろうと思うが、４番というのは想像できなかった。このＣＤを聴くまでは。

驚いた。こんな４番の解釈があって良いものだろうか。だが、これも紛れもない４番なのだ。超高速、かつ勇壮な演奏。

あの「英雄」と「運命」の間に書かれた交響曲がロマンチックというだけのイメージで考えてはいけなかったのだ。この演奏は、柔らかな偶数番号の交響曲と硬質で勇壮な奇数番号という意味のない既成概念にとらわれていたのを気持ちよく粉砕してしまった。それにしても、あの終楽章。オケの悲鳴が聞こえそうだ。

今から20年前にこのライヴ録音のレコードが出た時は、普通は考えられない４番１曲のみという演奏時間が短い盤だったにもかかわらず大変な反響と売れ行きでした。４番という「英雄」と「運命」にはさまれた、どちらかと言えば地味な谷間の白百合のような曲のそれまでのイメージを塗り替えたエポックメイキングな演奏です。ＣＤになってもその迫力は全く変わりません。４楽章などほとんどブレーキの壊れたレーシングカー状態でフィナーレに文字通り「突入」します！名演？快演？驚演？聴き終えた後にスカッとするベートーヴェンはめったにありません。
