歌を聴く人は大まかに2種類に分かれると思う。1つは歌詞を主として聴く人、１つは曲を主として聴く人だ。

ディープ・フォレストの曲は、前者にとっては敬遠されるものかもしれない。民族的で、どこの国の言葉なのかも分かりにくく、歌詞カードすら公表されていないものも多い。思うに彼らにとって歌声は楽器の一部で、歌詞と曲の完全な融合があって初めて、1つのサウンドが成立するのではないだろうか。

名曲、フリーダム・クライしかり、スウィート・ララバイしかり、彼らの曲は機械的なサウンドが導入されているのにも関わらず、その自然的な情景を思い浮かべ、懐かしささえ感じることが出来る。それは各所に埋め込まれている“声”の存在がやはり大きい。しかし機械的なサウンド、“声”、どちらかが主張しすぎてもいけない。その相互性、バランスがディープ・フォレストの魅力なのだ。

歌詞が分からなければ聴きたくないと言う人にぜひこのCDを聴いて欲しい。理屈ではなく惹かれる部分がきっとあるはずだ。

世界の民族音楽を斬新な手法で現代によみがえらせた
ディープフォレストのベスト盤。彼らがつくりだした名曲の
数々が厳選され、練り直され、一枚のＣＤになった。
「ユキソング」や「ウィル　ユウ　ビィ　レディ」などが
味のあるリミックスになり、シングルでしか聴けなかった
「ホワイル　ディ　アース　スリープス」や、

世界を席巻した「スウィート　ララバイ」の２００３年版
も収録され、また、公に発表されてはいないものの、
名曲「フリーダム　クライ」などが少し変更されているので、
聴き所満載、まさにエッセンス（凝縮）という感じになっている。

　いつも思いますが、テクノ系の激しい音と民族楽器を融合ひとつに融合してしまうこの斬新さに驚いてしまいます。元ちとせの歌声の深みに感激しました。
