 「ウルトラセブン」から4年後、第2次怪獣ブームの到来で実現した「ウルトラマン」の続編。とはいえ初代ウルトラマンとは異なった設定で、主人公・郷秀樹を中心に彼の所属する防衛チームMATや恩人、恋人たちを絡めたドラマ描写の丁寧さが最大の持ち味。ウルトラ・シリーズの最高傑作と呼ぶファンも多い。
   ウルトラマン復活の幕開けとなる第1、2話は「ゴジラ」などで知られる本多猪四郎監督が演出を手がけ、ファンを唸らせた。
   恐竜型の地球怪獣たちが中心の前半に対して、第18話「ウルトラセブン参上！」では宇宙怪獣の強敵ベムスターが登場。その力の前に傷ついたウルトラマンに、宇宙からウルトラセブンが万能兵器ウルトラ・ブレスレットを持ってやって来るというヒーローの共演は、当時の子どもたちの夢の実現であり、この共演を機に「ウルトラ兄弟」という設定が誕生した。（斉藤守彦）

ナックル星人に坂田兄弟を卑劣かつ残忍な手段で殺され、その心の動揺をつかれたウルトラマンは、ナックル星人と用心棒怪獣ブラックキングにこれでもかというぐらい痛めつけられ、磔にされてナックル星に運ばれてしまう。
坂田兄弟の死、夕陽の中ウルトラマンが破れてしまうシーンは衝撃的だ。

ナックル星では刻一刻とウルトラマンの処刑の時が迫る。
その時流れてきたのは初代ウルトラマンのテーマ曲のイントロ。その感動といったらとても言葉では表せないぐらい。
初代マンとセブンが協力して「ウルトラの星作戦」で新マンを救い出す。セブンのテーマから新マンのテーマに曲が変わり、新マンのカラータイマーと目が光ったとき、私は涙、涙でした。
前編の衝撃があったからこそ、この後編のウルトラ3兄弟のそろい踏みのシーンがものすごい感動を我々に与えてくれるのだと思います。

ウルトラマンを打倒する。それもパワーでなく精神的に追いつめる手法をもって。坂田やアキの残忍無残な殺し方ーさすがは怪奇大作戦でかまいたちを脚本した上原正三である。子供番組でよく放送できたものだ。
ウルトラマン夕日に死すはウルトラシリーズ屈指の傑作である。

この巻の37話でヒロインのアキ役の榊原るみサンと「帰マン」での象徴的役者たる岸田森サンが退場します。ある意味恋人アキよりも少年視聴者の代表である次郎よりも重要な役割を担っていた坂田健。郷が悩み苦しむ度にある時は励まし、ある時は敢えて突き放して、その成長を支えて来た健。その存在は人間ドラマ中心の「帰マン」には欠かせないキャラクターだったと思います。今は亡き岸田森サンの静かなる熱演を観る度に、もし最終回まで坂田健が生きながらえていたならウルトラマンだった郷の正体を知って何と言うだろうか?という夢想を抱いてしまいます。
