「家なき子」の話といえば、前半の師匠ビタリスとレミとの旅の方が印象が強く思われているようですが、後半の親友マチヤとレミの明るく前向きな旅の方が、私は作品のテーマであり、好きな旅だと思います。吹雪の中でレミを庇って死んだビタリスの存在は作品になくてはならないものを与えていますが、マチヤとレミの若者の生きる力に満ちた姿こそ、本当にこの作品で描きたかったことであろうと思うのです。アニメのスタッフもそのことを分かっていたのではないでしょうか。「溺れる時は僕も一緒だ。君一人を死なせやしない。行こう、飛ぶんだ！」と二人の腕をロープで結び、滝壷に飛び込んだレミとマチヤの姿が忘れられません。この作品は名作です。
