リリース当時、アナログでリアルタイムで聴いていましたが、今 CD で聴いても相変わらず感動させてくれる SIMPLE MINDS の間違い無く最高の作品です。（この路線はやはり CD で聴きたいですよね）。前作 SONS AND FASCINATION も個人的には非常にお気に入りの作品なのですが、やはり＝彼等のどれか１枚！＝と言われたら本作しかないです。とにかくオープニングの SOMEONE,SOMEWHERE IN SUMMERTIME。毎年夏になると、コレクションから引っ張り出して来てこの曲を数回聴かないと気が済まない。リリース当時のイギリスでの生活を思い出すんです。イギリスの夏の雰囲気と言うか、景色、空の色全てを賞味期限無しで封じ込めた傑作のナンバーです。最近　SIMPLE MINDS を少しづつ聴き始めた友人が＝この曲、何だか凄い良いんだよね＝と言っていました。分かってるな~。全９曲、駄作一切無し！。 UKチャート大ヒットナンバーPROMISED YOU A　MIRACLEとGLITTERING PRIZEが目玉的なナンバーですが、ハービーハンコック参加のスペーシーなインスト SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES YOU　にはコズミックにアップリフトされるし、 HUNTER AND THE HUNTED は、しんみりと聴きいってしまう、全９曲イモーショナル＆メランコリックで最高です（＋クール＆ファンキーです。）。 名ドラマーMEL GAYNORのタイトでマシンの様なドラミングも、本作で聴けるものが本作以降の迫力の有るロック的な叩き具合控えめで一番良い感じがします。＋当時 UKのジャケデザイン界では PETER SAVILLEと肩を並べる程の大物デザイナーだったMALCOM GARRET(DURAN DURANのジャケ等も手掛ける）による、このジャケデザインも良い！。文句の付けようが無い全てが完璧な作品です。この時期の UKエレポップの質の高さを象徴する作品でも有ります。

　次の作品で本国イギリスはもちろん、アメリカでも大ブレークし、一気にスタジアムを満杯にするバンドとなったシンプル・マインズだけれども、その直前、このアルバムは彼らの魅力が満載されたアルバムではないでしょうか。ポップでリリカル。当時のＵＫニュー・ウェイヴを象徴するバンドですな。しかも当時、もう中堅バンドになっていた彼らの曲作りは練られていて綻びがありません。音的には80年代中ごろの作品で古く聞こえるかもしれませんが、透き通るような繊細さを持った音楽の本質は変わらないと思います。ただし、まあ、アメリカではまず売れない音楽でしょうな。個人的にはただ一つのインスト曲が一番好きです。あと、なぜかハービー・ハンコックも参加。

2〜3曲良い物が有っても、他はいまいち…、又はどの曲も良いけどアルバムとしての統一感が無い、又は統一感は有るが何故かくどく感じる、そんなアルバムが多い中で、この作品は文句のつけ様が無いです。駄作が無くて粒揃い、世界的に大ヒットした曲が有るわけではないですが、各曲の繋ぎ、バランスが高次元でとれているのだと思います。1曲目から静かにジワジワと気持ちが昂ぶって行くのが気持ち良いです。ジム・カーのちょっともったいぶった様なドラマティックなヴォーカル、暖かみを帯びたフワッと浮遊感のあるシンセ、出しゃばらないが存在感のあるドラムス、そこに有機的に絡んでくるベース。全てが官能的で、未だもって全く飽きがこない稀有な作品。但し、デジタルリマスターの恩恵は、スパークルインザレインほどは感じられないです。元々シンプルなアレンジだから仕方ないかな？
