The Chili Peppers finally hit their stride with Mother's Milk, for the first time making their breakneck mix of funk, rap, and metal smooth enough to attract the masses, while keeping it raw enough not to alienate old fans. They've straddled that edge ever since. It didn't hurt that they offered a pretty mainstream cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" to introduce the album. That single though, and the rest of Mother's Milk (including "Knock Me Down" and the randy "Sexy Mexican Maid") is pure Pepper--from Anthony Kiedis's in-your-face vocals to Flea's chattering bass. Milk was also guitarist John Frusciante's debut with the group and he shines, especially on Jimi Hendrix's "Fire." --Michael Ruby

今や、世界最強バンドと名高いレッチリの一番元気で、やんちゃだった頃のアルバム。個人的には、このアルバムが一番好きだな。次のアルバムからプロデューサーがリック・ルービンに変わって、少し勢いやスピード感がなくなった感じがして・・・まぁ、それはそれでいいんだけどネ。このアルバムは、ファンクあり・ラップあり・ジミヘンのカバーありのごった煮って感じだけど、僕のフェイバリット・アルバムです。

89年に発売されたR.H.C.P.出世作のリマスター盤。
音質向上を求めての再購入であれば、格段の進歩とはいかないが、私の持ってる既発米盤より明らかに音圧は高い。
その分、高音がはっきりした感じ。
特筆すべきは６曲（うち未発表５曲）のボーナストラックだ。
オリジナルに親しんだ方にはJonny,Kick A Hole…で終わらないと、というむきもあると思うが、あの頃のR.H.C.P.が好きならば#14、１曲でも買う価値がある。
ギターがオーバーダビングされているがボーカルなしのジャム風デモ。
新加入したジョン・フルシアンテとフリーの楽しげな姿が目に浮かぶようだ。
川崎に初来日した時、ただただ圧倒された、あの凄まじいパワーが蘇る。

レッチリの知名度を一気に押し上げ、次作での商業的成功への布石となった、
EMI時代のエネルギッシュな作風を締めくくる傑作です。

この頃のレッチリにとっては前作までも含めファンクが大きな要素でしたが、楽曲の裾野は拡げつつも、
しっかりとファンクさは維持されています。これには、この作品から加入し、現在もギタリストを務めている
ジョン・フルシアンテが散りばめた、キレ味鋭いカッティングプレイが大きく貢献しています。
彼がレッチリの作風を左右する重要人物であることは、彼の抜けた6thの作風の変貌ぶりがよく証明しています。

ジミヘンのFIREや、スティービー・ワンダーのHigher Groundのカバーも秀逸。
