   レッド・ツェッペリンは、シングル盤をおざなりにしかリリースしなかったことからも、アルバム・バンドと言ってまちがいない。このベスト盤は、そんなツェッペリンの60年代末から70年代の作品から、独立した1曲としても最高の曲を集めている。そして、以前には別々にリリースされていたアルバム2枚を1組にまとめることで、往年のブリティッシュ・ロックのこのうえなく貴重なセットとなっている。

   ディスク1「Early Days」は、最初の4枚のアルバムから選んだ13曲を年代順に並べ、ストーナー・ロックの先駆けとなった「Dazed and Confused」や、すばらしいリフの「Whole Lotta Love」、クイーンの「Bohemian Rhapsody」と並んで賞賛される数少ない曲のひとつ「Stairway to Heaven」といった名曲をそろえている。ディスク2「Latter Days」は、延々と続く最高のブルース「The Song Remains the Same」で幕を開け、はうように進むギターと神々しいヴォーカルの「No Quarter」へと続く。そして、ロック史上屈指の壮大かつ個性的なギターのフックを聴かせる「Kashmir」で勇壮な瞬間を迎える。この曲は、ディスク1の4分間の“ポップ”ソングに、まったく異なる音楽観を持ちこんでいる。

   本作の唯一の欠点は、多くのベスト盤と同じく、バンドの魅力をあまさず収録する余裕がないことだ。これはツェッペリンの熱狂的なファンのあいだで論争を呼ぶはずだ。どうして3作目からたったの2曲しか収録されていないんだ？ どう考えても4作目の収録曲「When the Levee Breaks」より、「Tangerine」「Gallows Pole」の方が（ツェッペリンの典型的な曲とは言えないが）重要ではないだろうか？ なぜ2作目から「Ramble On」をさしおいて「What Is and What Should Never Be」を選んだのか？

   だが、こうした問題は簡単に解決できる。もし本作を聴いて楽しめたのなら、ツェッペリンのオリジナル・フルアルバムを手に入れることだ。この多作を誇ったパイオニア的なロックバンドは、おおよその全体像をとらえたアンソロジーを組むのにさえ、2枚組コンピレーションではまったく足りないのだから。（David Trueman, Amazon.co.uk）

肝心の曲が数曲入っていないんでしょうね。これは、どのアーティスト
にも言えることですが。
まず、DISK1の2.(アイム)ゴナ・リーブ・ユー、DISK2の3.聖なる館、は
ベスト盤には不要でしょう。
代わりに、ハートブレイカーと死にかけて、あたりを推したいところ
です。
これで気に入った方は、どれでもいいから、気に入った曲の収録されて
いるオリジナル・アルバムを1枚購入して、聴きこんでみてください。

天才とも言えるジミーページのギター、重厚なボンゾのドラム、
安定したジョン・ポールのベース、高音で力強いロバートの歌声。
まさにハードロックの頂点を極めたレッドツェッペリン。
彼らの栄光と成功が詰った最高傑作と言えよう。

特に、聖歌といわれる「天国への階段」は幻想的な雰囲気が聴く者を圧倒する。演奏、アレンジ、どれをとってもやはり王者の風格が漂っている。
ロックを極める者ならば必ず聞かなければならない一枚だろう。

~　ほぼ『天国への階段』の音源欲しさにこのアルバムを購入しました。この曲が入っているオリジナルアルバムでもよかったんですが、なんせ初心者なので入門編として購入しました。やっぱり想像以上にすばらしい曲でした。静から動につながり、昇華していくサウンドと美しいメロディ。深い歌詞と曲のためか、８分という大作にも関わらず、長さを全く感じさせま~~せん。そして時間をかけて他の曲もこれから聞き込んでいきます。また、『天国への階段』が好きな方には菅野よう子さんのアルバム『WOLF'S RAIN O.S.T.2』に収録されている『heaven's not enough』もおすすめです。私は勝手ながらこの曲は『天国への階段』にインスパイアされて作られたような気がしています。こちらも美しいです。~
