   ニュー・ソウルのパイオニア、エリカ・バドゥにとって3作目のスタジオ・アルバムとなる『Worldwide Underground』。ジャズ風の洗練された官能性と異色の天才性を兼ね備えた作品だ。間違いなく、バドゥは独創的なアーティストだった（今もそうだが）。1997年のデビュー・アルバム『Baduizm』はソウル、ジャズ、ルーツィーなヒップ・ホップを意外な手法で風味豊かに融合させ、ローリン・ヒル、ジル・スコット、インディア・アリー、メイシー・グレイ、アリシア・キーズらが台頭する基盤を築いたのである。

   ところが『Worldwide Underground』では、前作『Mama's Gun』と同様に、バドゥの開拓者精神が裏目に出てしまっている。華麗な「I Want You」は、その端的な例だろう。拍子抜けするぐらいに単純素朴な楽想が、とんでもなくセクシーなグルーヴへと変化する。本作のハイライトといえそうな幻惑的な展開だ。ところがどうしたことか、音楽はその後、奇っ怪で刺々しいシンセ・リフとジャズ/フュージョン的なとりとめのない即興演奏になだれ込んでしまう。そして冴えを取り戻したかと思えば、支離滅裂な混乱状態に逆戻りする。魅力、アイデア、効果的なプロデュース術は随所でたっぷりと確認できるのだが、リスナーを退屈させまいとするあまり、収拾のつかないカオス状態に突入してしまうきらいがあるのだ。

   とはいえ、「Bump It Up」や「Danger」の催眠術のようなメロディー、「Woo」の思わず体が動いてしまうノリのよさ、「Think Twice」や「Back in the Day」のような抱擁力のあるソウル・チューンのつるべ打ちは圧倒的だ。バドゥにはまだ聴く者を魅了する力が残っている。たとえ彼女が頑張りすぎてしまったとしてもだ。（Dan Gennoe, Amazon.co.uk）

オリジナルアルバムとしては通算3作目となるものが登場。結論から言えば、エリカは再び金字塔を打ち立てたとでもいうか。一聴すると地味なように聞こえるが、これがなんとも滋味な作品で。とにかく全体がジャムっぽいのだ。ストレートなサウンドで、今までの作品の中で一番わかりやすいことは確か。(2)(4)など今のご時世ではありえない長尺の曲だが、これを一気に押し通せるのはさすが。(2)なんか極上のスロウジャムだし、先行シングル(7)での南部の臭いプンプンのファンクなんかも最高。今までの作品も同様だが、エリカのアルバムのストーリー性の高さは相当のもの。計算されつくされている感もあるが、それも嫌味なものでは決して、ない。待った甲斐はあった。恐るべき完成度を持つアルバムがここにまた一枚!。

今までの作品がJAZZ&FUNKの匂いが強いとすれば、今回は打ち込みがメインとなり、良く言えば洗練された音作りの大人のHip-Hopといった感じのつくりです。でも、つややかでやや翳りのあるヴォーカルは相変わらずカッコイイ！ゲスト参加のロイ・ハードグローヴやレニー・クラヴィッツもキメてます。秋の夜長にじっくりゆっくり楽しめる1枚です。
