ボブ・ディランは長く紆余曲折に満ちたキャリアを送ってきた。そのなかの数多くの奇妙な出来事のひとつに、彼が首謀者として引っ張ったローリング・サンダー・レビュー・ツアーのかなりおざなりなレコーディング作品があった。だが、その欠点が本作のリリースによって修正されることになった。2枚組の本作の前にも、このごった煮的なツアーの様子は稀少な映像作品であるディランが監督した映画『レナルド＆クララ』や、断片的で単調な1976年のライヴ盤『Hard Rain』に記録されていた。
そうした以前の作品とは対照的に、本作は75年11月と12月に行われた4回の公演から選りすぐり、ディランのとどろく雷鳴のごときパフォーマンスのスケール感と細やかさをしっかりとらえている。『Nashville Skyline』収録の以前はカントリー調だった「Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You」は、本作ではうって変わっている。また、「It Ain't Me Babe」を明るく彩っているのは多楽器奏者デビッド・マンスフィールドと、この急ごしらえの愉快な寄せ集めバンドの推進役でありデヴィッド・ボウイのバンドの元ギタリストだったミック・ロンソンである。
そして、騒々しいフルバンド編成での古いナンバー（「The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll」）や新しいナンバー（76年初めになって発表された『Desire』収録の「Hurricane」を含む5曲）の演奏のあいだに、アコースティック・ソロが組みこまれている。ツアーに多くのバンドのメンバーやゲストが参加するなか、ジョーン・バエズは特筆に価するめずらしい「Mama, You Been On My Mind」やトラディショナルソングの「The Water is Wide」など4曲に参加し、ディランとスポットライトをわけあっている。けれども、どんなに多彩なゲストが登場しようとも本作はディランのショーであり、70年代のディランがどのようにして自身の60年代の絶頂期に区切りをつけたのかを示している。（Steven Stolder ,Amazon.com）
