初期イエスのキーボード奏者、トニー・ケイの唯一のリーダー・バンドである、バヂャーの2ndアルバムがようやくCD化された。プログレ・ハードの名盤として語られる1stとは裏腹に、本作はそこから路線転換を図って大コケしたアルバム、という評価が定着して久しい。

しかし、それは「プログレ」信者のあまりに身勝手な、偏った見方だと思う。そもそも、バヂャーは「プログレ」を指向するバンドだったのだろうか？

考えてもみて欲しい。1960年代のイギリスのロック界でオルガン奏者として活躍していた人間が、黒人音楽に恋焦がれていないわけがないのだ。クラシックは英国人にとっては民謡なわけで、いやでも体に染み付いているもの。トニーが「影響」された音楽は、海の向こうのR&RやR&Bを置いて他にない。もし彼がイエスの実権を握っていたら、彼等はPファンク化していたかも知れない。

というわけで、トニーはきっと、もっと黒い音楽をやりたくて自分のバンドを組んだのだ。1stを聴き込んだ人ならそれがよく分かると思う。あの宗教的な詞の世界といい、ラストの熱いヴォーカルを中心にグイグイ盛り上がる展開といい、あのアルバムで呈示されていたのは彼等流のゴスペル以外の何物でもない。それがハード・ロックに聞こえたのは、この時のメンバーと突発的に実現したライヴ・レコーディングといった制作時の環境によるものだ。R・ディーンのジャケットを含め、みんな「イエス」というブランドに騙されているのだ。

そして、メンバー・チェンジと最高の環境を得て、トニーの理想はあまねくここに実現された。本作こそがバヂャーの真の姿であり、勝負作だったのだ。ヴォーカルにもっとわかりやすい人...例えばスティーブ・マリオットとか...を起用していれば、当時のファンも素直に受け入れられたと思う。徹頭徹尾歌と練られたアンサンブルを聴かせる内容で、特にクライマックスの「夢をもう一度」でのアラン・トゥーサンによる重厚なオルガンは実に美味だ。その一方、このバンドの寡黙なリーダーはあくまでアンサンブルの触媒に徹していて、前面に出ることはない。しかし、それはあくまで彼のスタイルであり哲学。ウェイクマンやモラーツのようなプレイを期待する方が間違っているのだ。今回の再発を契機に、改めて正しい評価がされることを期待したい。Stand up BADGER!!

多くのレヴューアーさんたちが言われているように、もともとトニー・ケイがやりたかった音はどういうものだったのか？どちらかといえばこの２枚目こそがやりたかった音楽ではなかったのか？冷静に考えたらこの推測が正しいような気がします。１枚目のロジャー・ディーンのジャケットに騙された？・・・・のかな。でも１枚目は素晴らしいプログレ・ハードだと思う。これはこれで素晴らしい出来です。残念ながら２枚目はあんまりヒットしなかったのでご本人にインタビューした記事などは当時なかった気がしてます。したがって本音のところはわかりません。それはそれで楽しい憶測の世界です。この２枚の違和感？いやいや共通点いっぱい？やっぱりとおしで聞くのはしんどいかな？？
