　レナー弦楽四重奏団はベートーベンの全曲録音をした史上初の団体である。大昔はどんな団体でも簡単にレコーディングできて発売される時代ではなかったわけで、本当に選りすぐりの名人・名団体のみがそういう機会を与えられたのである。彼らは貧弱な録音の中、膨大な数の演奏を残した。
　ここにあるのはその中から選ばれた２枚組で、１枚目は非常に古い録音による弦楽四重奏曲（の楽章）集。２枚目は１枚目よりも新しい録音による、ピアノ曲その他の弦楽四重奏曲への編曲が中心になっている。
　１枚目は「セレナーデ」「ひばり」「不協和音」「アメリカ」「死と乙女」等々の有名曲が収録されている。正直音の状態がひどく、ＳＰに収めるためにカットされている曲もあるが、それでも聴かせるのはさすがである。チャイコフスキーなどは、音の悪さなど全然気にならなかった。
　２枚目は録音年代が新しいので、１枚目よりはずっとよい音で聴くことができる。
　１番気に入ったのは、２枚目に収録されているＧ線上のアリアである。弦楽四重奏なら編曲しなくてもそのまま演奏できるはずなのだが、ここではＧ線だけで演奏できるように調もハ長調に移している。格調高く堂々とした演奏でしかも美しい。
　現在では演奏されなくなった曲もいくつかあるし、値段も安いし、録音の古さを気にしない人にはおすすめ。
　譬えは変だが、レナーを聴かないというのはフルトベングラーにステレオ録音がないから聴かないというようなものである。レナーというと化石のように思っている人たちも、ベートーベン全曲集などは、特にファンであれば絶対に耳にするべきだ（このアルバムにはベートーベンは１曲もない）。
