まだ３０代だった青年ポリーニの胸のすくような会心の演奏。シューベルトの第１６番イ短調ソナタは呟くようなユニゾンの不思議なフレーズから始まり、段階を追ってクレッシェンドで音楽が膨張しますが、それをポリーニは輝かしくスケールの大きな音楽として提示します。リヒテルの古いモノラル録音と並ぶ凄い演奏と言えます。構造的に幾重にも濠を廻らしたようなシューマンの大規模で複雑なソナタが、イタリアの天才の手にかかると明快で緻密な傑作と認知できるのですから大したものです。もしかすると現在のポリーニよりずっと明快で痛烈な演奏かもしれない。自身大変満足しているのか、これらの曲は再録音されていません。

衝撃的なショパンの12+12の練習曲の後、‘73に発表されたこのアルバム。
オリジナル盤では“さすらい人幻想曲”と“ピアノソナタ第16番”のカップリングだったと思う。
ピアノソナタ第16番〜〜〜シューベルトのピアノソナタの多くは、
自分で弾くと同じテーマの繰り返しが多く、
時としてくどさや退屈さを覚える事がありますが、
ポリーニのこの演奏ではそれらを感じることは全く無く、
爽快・明晰な演奏に圧倒されてしまいます。
こんなにも美しい旋律を伴っていたのかと、曲の随所で驚きを感じます。

3.0 out of 5 stars ポリーニはやっぱ苦手・・・元祖アスリートとしてのピアニスト！, 2009/6/3
最初はオオッと思うのだが、やっぱダメだ・・・飽きがくる。ペトルーシュカもそうだったが、なんと無意味なまでにチャカチャカ回る指だこと！（今は知らんが・・・「アスリート」にとって加齢は致命傷だろう・・・）後世のピアニストの卵に悪い影響与えたのでは？このタイプの「コンクール荒らし」みたいなピアニストを「量産」してないか？「で？それで？」って思わずツッコミたくなる。理屈ぬきで、何度か聴くと必ず飽きがくる。ただオレが鈍感なだけなのか？だとすれば、ポリーニ好きの人には申し訳ない・・・
深く聴き込めば、最終的にはその演奏家の生き方、価値観そのものに共鳴できるかどうかだと思う。
年取ってガタガタになる生き方自体に魅力を感じない。断じてピアニストはアスリートではない。
