大傑作の前作と次作にはさまれ少々地味な印象のアルバムですが、この時代の彼らの作品に駄作はない。アニーの声とバンドの卓越した演奏技量は他に類を見ない、まさにone and onlyです。

イギリスのクラシカルロックバンド、ルネッサンスのアルバム。1974作
「運命のカード」のタイトルで知られる名曲多数の傑作。紙ジャケリマスター盤。
名作「燃ゆる灰」と「シェラザード夜話」にはさまれて、今一つ注目度の低い本作だが、
内容では決して引けをとらない。艶やかなピアノによるクラシカルなイントロから、
軽快なリズムで始まる“Running Hard”は、典雅なハープシコードがオーケストラと合わさり
シンフォニックに聴かせる屈指の名曲。アニー・ハズラムの瑞々しい歌声も素晴らしい。
“Things I Don't Understand”はクラシカルで叙情味豊かなドラマティックな大曲で、
ラスト曲の“Mother Russia”の雄大な美しさとともにこのアルバムの核をなしている。
やはり聴き直しても本作も素晴らしい作品だ。この時代のルネッサンスに外れなし。

このアルバムは、ルネッサンスのアルバムの中では
比較的地味な評価を得ているように思えます。

しかし、このアルバムでルネッサンスを初めて聴く人は
きっとこう思うでしょう。


このアルバムのどこが地味なのかと、、、


雑誌の評価に惑わされることはないと思います。

ルネッサンスでまず聴いておきたいのは
本アルバムと、
「四季」です。

他のアルバムにはなかなか見ることのできない
躍動感と高揚感のバランスの良さが魅力だと思います。
