Transformer, Lou Reed's second post-Velvet Underground album, was produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson (Bowie's guitarist) in 1972. It features such classics as "Vicious" and "Walk on the Wild Side," as well as a boppin', subdued version of "Andy's Chest," which the Velvet Underground had already recorded. The CD's consistently goofy and great back-up vocals are courtesy of Bowie and Ronson. Brace yourself for Lou's usual cast of characters: transvestites, junkies, weirdoes, Holly, Candy, Little Joe, Sugar, Jacki--even Harry, Mark, and John, who stop by to say hi in the middle of "Satellite of Love." "Goodnight Ladies" features a rockin' tuba downbeat, and a baritone sax that'll wail you away to la-la land. Other than that, it's Reed's raw guitar and rah-rah lyrics, like, "The tinsel light of starbreak/Is all that's left to applaud my heartbreak/And at 11 o'clock I watch the network news." --Dan Leone

　ルー・リードのセカンド・アルバムです。"Loaded"がポップになりすぎたと批判されたためソロのファーストは過剰にロック色が強くなりました。で、次がボウイの影響が強く出た本作で、その次はルー・リードらしくないほど過剰にアレンジされた"Berlin"・・・・これらはどれも避けて通れない名作ではありますが、当時のルー・リードがなかなか「自分のサウンド」が出せずに苦労していた、ということが分かります。結局ルー・リードって"Blue Mask"や"New York"あたりで突き抜けるまで、この手の悩みが絶えず付きまとっていたようですしね。
　それはさておき、名曲てんこもりのこのアルバムですが、僕のお気に入りは絶望的なラヴ・ソングの「サテライト・オヴ・ラヴ」です。人工衛星でいろいろ見えるんだよ、というよく分からない歌詞で始まり、ブリッジで「月曜・火曜・水曜・木曜、ハリーとマークとジョンと一緒だったんだね」というとんでもないオチをつける。大変嫌な気分になる曲です。

普通、ルー・リードの代表作と言えばこれ。のみならず、ボウイの『ジギー・スターダスト』やTレックスの『電気の武者』と並んでグラム・ロックを語る上で外せない一枚としても知られている。

確かに「ワイルドサイドを歩け」「ヴィシャス」「サテライト・オブ・ラブ」「パーフェクト・デイ」といったキラー・チューンを並べられると「参りました」という他ない。

でも、このアルバムを聴いてルー・リードを分かったつもりになってはいけない。本物はもっとむき出しで、骨太でごつごつしていて、メロディ無視で詩の朗読かつ音痴で、装飾を削ぎ落とした音で勝負、の人なのだ。ではこのアルバムの聴き所は一体どこかというと、正にプロデュースを担当したボウイによる「お化粧」の部分である。

そのことが一番よく分かるのは４曲目で、いかにも地味で穴埋めっぽい曲なのに、取ってつけたかのようなクールなリズム・パターンと豪奢なバック・コーラスによって、非常にグルーヴィーなトラックに仕上げられている。今聴いても十分通用する、ウネリ系の腰にくるグルーヴである。

ホント、プロデューサーとしてのボウイの耳のよさ、センスの確かさに今更ながら脱帽（イギー・ポップの「ラスト・フォー・ライフ」でも十分スゴイと思ったのだけれど）。ただし、ルー・リードの神髄はここにはないので、入門者はベスト盤から入っていく方がいいでしょう（名曲「レジェンダリー・ハーツ」の入っているヤツがオススメ）。

４０代の知人にすすめられ、このアルバムを聴きました。私が生まれるずっと前の音楽です。一番残ってしまったのは７曲目の「Satellite of Love」･･･今から３０年もの昔にlou reedは衛星を通じた愛を歌っています。当時より年を重ねた彼を、Ｕ２のビデオで見ました。コンサートの中で衛星を通じてヴォーカルとlou reedはSatellite of Loveを歌っていました。そのときなんともいえない気分になりそれ以来この曲は私の好きな、大切な曲の１つです。全体的に柔らかい曲が多い一枚、静かな部屋で一人聴き入りそのあと散歩に出たくなります。
