「3D格闘と言えば？」
と問われれば私は昔も今も迷わずこの「闘神伝」と答えます。
発売当時は小学生でしたが、毎日のように飽きもせず友人の家に集まって対戦を繰り返したものです。今でも時々プレイします。あの、「ソウルエッジ」を作り直させたという逸話を知ったのは随分と後の事でしたが、納得です。
ポリゴンは粗く、軸や空間の作り込み具合は「バーチャファイター」に遠く及ばない。ですがそれでもなお、楽しませてくれる要素は十分にあります。
今でこそありふれた存在ですが、当時としては「ポリゴン」で「三次元的に動く」キャラクターが「武器を持って」闘うという形式はかなり斬新でした。ボタン1つで必殺技が出せる親切設計もライトユーザーには嬉しい仕様。ことぶきつかさ先生の描く個性的なキャラクター陣も魅力でした。
通常斬り、蹴りヒット時の効果音が軽く、爽快感がやや不足している感はありますが、過剰なまでのエフェクトの必殺技がそれを補っています。
残念ながらシリーズを重ねる毎に完成度が低くなってしまいましたが、逆に「ソウルエッジ」の流れを組む「ソウルキャリバー」シリーズは素晴らしい進歩を遂げているので、ゲーム業界に貢献したという意味でも重要な一作と言えるでしょう。

アーケード版「ソウルエッジ」を作りなおさせた、なんて事もあった当時にしてはナイスな1本です。

ＰＳ初期が出た時期に発売されたソフトです。
久しぶりに立ち上げてプレイしてみましたけれど、当時の３Ｄ格闘の感動した思い出が蘇ってきます。
今になると流石にプレイする人もあまりいないと思いますが、こういう作品があったということを次世代に伝わればと思います。
