   時は戦国時代、武将・鷲津武時（三船敏郎）は、妻・浅茅（山田五十鈴）にそそのかされて主君を殺害し、その城主となるが、朝茅は次は親友の三木義明（千秋実）を殺害するよう強要する…。
   黒澤明監督が敬愛するシェークスピアの『マクベス』を戦国時代に翻案して描いた、幻想と恐怖に彩られた人間の業を露にする戦国絵巻。武時に謎の予言を伝える老婆（浪花千栄子）の不気味な幽玄性や、「森が動く」という台詞どおりに本当に森が動いたとばかりに驚嘆させる映像技術の素晴らしさ、そしてクライマックスでは、主人公に本当に無数の矢を射かけていくという、ダイナミズムを通り超えた恐怖の演出をも堪能できる。能を効果的に用いた佐藤勝の音楽も秀逸で、彼は本作から黒澤娯楽映画絶頂期の音楽をことごとく担当し続けることになった。（的田也寸志）

黒澤明監督の作品はすべて持っています。その中でも一番好きな作品です。二番は、虎の尾、三番、用心棒あと、赤ひげ、生きもの、酔いどれ天使、乱、と続きます。ビデオ、LD、DVD、ブルーレイと視聴環境は良くなっているにもかかわらず、ソフトの値段が如何せんまだ高いのが現状です。私はマスターワークス3巻計約13万その他は単品で揃えましたのでそこそこ高い買い物でしたがいつでも好きな時に観れるので、無理をして購入しましたが、考えますと作品自体もう40年50年前のものです。内容が古いというのではなく、せめて普及版でお求め易い価格なら1500円が妥当なところでしょう。定価3990円なら半年前の洋画の新作の値段だと思いますが如何でしょう。アメリカと比較するのは良くないですが、新作でも10ドル位で買えます。まあ、世界規模ですから安くできると云えなくもないですが。名作を安価な価格で沢山売る事がメーカーの務めだと思いますが。一考お願い致します。

　最初のシーンから半ばまでのテンションが凄い。思わず見入ってしまった。蜘蛛の出の森のモノクロ映像が怪しげで、よく映画の雰囲気が出ていた。
　だか、黒澤映画の値段は高すぎる。廉価版を出して欲しい。

この映画、周囲に向かって大声で叫ぶ場面が多い。
「者ども、出あえ！」「開門！」「物の怪、出あえ！」
三船さん独特の骨太の声がなくしては、この武将の力強さはでないでしょう。
代わって奥方は低い声でゆっくりと絞め殺すようにささやく。
「私はそうは思いません」
身近に低くささやく声の圧力に負け、疑心をだいた鷲津武時は殺人を繰り返していく。
鳥が叫ぶように鳴き、奥方が歩くと衣擦れの音がする。
静寂と切り裂くような音の対比が見事です。
殺風景で広い室内は寒々として、相手の顔を見ないで感情をださずに話す奥方の不気味さ。
そして奥方が手を洗う場面。声も顔もまったく別人。
（ビビアン・リーがこの場面をひどく気に入っていたそうですが、納得できます）
目をギロギロさせて、矢を射られていく鷲津武時。
背に旗をたて鎧兜姿で馬で走る武将の美しさ、城の門の堅剛さ。
英産「マクベス」とはいえ、日本の美しさ重厚さが満載。音響も和風のダイナミズム。
兜のデザインだけでも充分見ごたえあり。重厚な作品です。
