Continuing to specialize in the art of curve-throwing, R.E.M. followed up its 1991 smash, Out of Time, with this fragile album of soft melodies and string arrangements. The sympathetic ballad "Everybody Hurts" must have prevented countless suicide attempts, while the Andy Kaufman tribute "Man on the Moon" (with Michael Stipe affecting an Elvis Presley imitation) and the rock-into-oblivion "Drive" are among the quartet's strongest hits. (The opening line, "Hey, kids, rock and roll," isn't so much a rallying cry as an expression of anxiety.) It takes a few listens for its charms to unfold, but Automatic is the gem between bigger hits Out of Time and Monster. --Steve Knopper

R.E.M.の通産８作目になる作品。NIRVANAのカート・コバーンが自殺をしたときに聞いていたアルバムとしても有名だが、日本では洋楽ファンでも意外とそのことを知る人は少ないのではないだろうか。カート・コバーンがかつてインタビューの中でR.E.M.のメロディーセンスについて「あれだけ美しいメロディーをデビュー以来書き続けているなんてまるで神のようだ」という種の発言をしていたが、このアルバムはまさにカートのそんな言葉通りの珠玉のメロディーであふれている。それでいて少しも媚びたところを感じさせずに、ロックとしての完全な立ち居地をも体現している様はまさに最強のロックバンドと呼ぶにふさわしい。

アルバム全体として重い空気が漂っているのだが、その重さは決してリスナーを拒否しているのではなくむしろ、その重みが絶対的な安心感を聴く側に与える。単なるナルシシズムとしての重みでも、誰かに強制するような類の重みでもないし、自虐的なそれでもない。かといって心地よい布団のような暖かみのある重みでもない。R.E.M.はいつもそうしてきたようにこのアルバムでもリスナーに問いかけているのである。そしてその問いかけは決してわかりやすいものではない。8曲目のIgnoreland のようなアメリカの政治に対する直接的なメッセージよりも、むしろその問いかけは個別の曲を越えてアルバムを聴き終えたときに漠然とリスナーに届く。本当にいい絵を見たとき、本当にいい本を読んだときにだけ心を叩く、静かだが時計の針のように確実な鼓動が頭のどこかで聞こえてくる。その感触が他のどのR.E.M.のアルバムよりも確かに僕には感じられる。ベストである。これはR.E.M.のベストであると同時にロックの一つのベストを提示している。

アルバムのハイライトは90年代オルタナが生んだ珠玉の名曲Man on the Moon、夏の終わりにこれ以上ふさわしい曲はないであろうNightswimming、そしてアルバムの抱えていたすべてを解き放つFind the Riverのラスト3曲。おそらくこのラスト３曲の流れはロック史全体を見渡しても最も美しい流れの一つではないだろうか。余談になるが05年のR.E.Mの10年振りの日本ツアーの大阪公演では観客のリクエストに答える形でNightswimming、Find　the Riverの流れを彼らは披露している。

R.E.Mの凄さは曲作りのセンスの良さ、独特のサウンド、マイケル スタイプスのユニ-クなボ-カルにある。そういう意味で彼らには何枚かの傑作アルバムがあるが、これはその1枚に入る。彼らがデビュ-した'80年代はある意味でロックミュ-ジック（正確にはハ-ドロックの、と言うべきか）の停滞期であったが、そこに彼らのような、斬新でアコ-スティックでいかにもアメリカらしいサウンドが現れ、あっというまに全米の、いや世界中の若者の心を掴んだのである。このアルバムに収められている全ての曲が素晴らしい。リ-ダ-格のマイケルはまさに天才に近いミュ-ジシャンである。マストバイアイテムの作品である。

讃えることしかできない。悲しみに満ち、怒りに満ち、愛に満ちたアルバム。
カレッジ・ロック時代とはまったく違う。垢抜けし、メロディーも非常にポップだ。けどこの暗さはポップスとは明らかに一線を画している。コンセプチュアルな配列で、まるで川が海へ向かって流れるように曲は続いていく。徐々に光が見えてくるかのような感じもいい。何をとっても高度な次元まで達している。この暗さが嫌にならないのはきっと聴き終わったあと癒されているからなんだろう。静かな感動。皆さんの生活に欠けてはいないだろうか。
僕もその一人だけど、実に多くの人が本作を「生涯の名盤」だと認識している(あのカート・コバーンだってそうだった)。一度聴いてみてほしい。心からそう思っている。
