四枚組の本ＣＤ、伝説の大指揮者エーリッヒ・クライバーが、トスカニーニのＮＢＣ交響楽団に呼ばれて客演したときの、四回のコンサートの全記録。クライバーとＮＢＣ交響楽団の組み合わせに惹かれて買いましたが、客演という制限された条件下で、良くも悪くも個性の強烈なＮＢＣ交響楽団を見事にコントロールしているのは凄いこと！　トスカニーニの時とは違った形で、この名手揃いの優れたオーケストラの美質をしっかりと引き出しています。ストコフスキーは別格としても、例えばブルーノ・ワルターの客演の場合にはかなりオーケストラに引きずられてあまりうまくいっていないのですが、クライバーはピシッと決めてきます。この人、トスカニーニのダイナミックな推進力とはまた違った、独特のシャープなリズム感があり、「天性のもの」としか言い様がありません。プログラムの中では、若い頃のクラウディオ・アラウをソリストに迎えたウェーバーの「コンチェルトシュトゥック」が美しく一押し。ベートーヴェンの「エグモント」序曲が凄絶な名演。シューベルトの交響曲第５番、ボロディンの交響曲第２番、チャイコフスキーの交響曲第４番はどれも名演。残念なことは、お目当てのベートーヴェンの『エロイカ』が意外におとなしく、スタジオ録音の名盤に及ばないこと。録音のばらつきと、全体の音質自体が今ひとつということも併せて、あくまでもコレクターのためのものです。
