   アメリカの建国記念日に生を受けたロンは、21歳のときに海兵隊員としてベトナムに派遣された。しかし負傷し、下半身不随となって帰国する。彼が傷ついたのは体だけではなかった。信じていた祖国に裏切られたからだ。
   自らベトナムで2度負傷し、『プラトーン』でアカデミー賞を受賞したオリバー・ストーン監督。本作は、ロン・コービックの原作を10年越しの悲願実現で映画化したもので、89年のアカデミー監督賞を受賞している。『レイン・マン』で演技派に転向したトム・クルーズがロンを演じ、その後の俳優人生を決定づけた。共演にはウィレム・デフォー、キーラー・セジウィックなどの演技派がそろう。

ベトナム帰還兵の物語です。愛国心から戦場に行って、負傷して帰ってきた兵士が味わう悲劇。国を救う戦いであれば兵士は英雄になりますが、それ以外で戦争が行われているとき、兵士にはどんな境遇が待ち受けているのでしょう。アメリカは今も戦場に多くの兵士を派遣しています。この悲劇はベトナムだけで終わっていないでしょう。

無邪気なころのアメリカ、苦悩するアメリカ、再び立ち上がるアメリカを、アメリカの大義を信じて疑わなかったロニー（トム・クルーズ）に重ねて、ベトナム戦争の真実を描ききったオリバー・ストーンの傑作。アメリカに戻った車椅子のロニーと母親の再会、自らの誤射で死なせた戦友の両親・未亡人への告白など何度見ても胸に迫るシーンとともに、後半はロニーへの感情移入で一気に引き込まれる。音楽も素晴らしい。

「もっと人間らしく扱ってくれ！俺はベトナムで戦ったんだぞ！｣「神なんて俺の死んだペニスと同じだ！｣「こんな俺を誰が愛してくれるというんだ！｣・・・帰国してからのロンのセリフはズシリと胸にこたえます。この作品は、「国のためなら命を捨ててもいい｣という愛国的な青年が、戦場で過酷な経験をし、信じていた祖国から裏切られ、身も心もボロボロになった後、「私は祖国を愛している。｣と蘇るまでの過程を丹念に追っていきます。途中、あまりにもつらくなってしまうシーンもありますが、目を背けず、この作品のメッセージをしっかりと受け止めるべきだと思います。
