   アメリカ空軍基地の司令官が突然発狂し、ソ連の戦略核基地攻撃命令を出してしまう。しかし、ソ連側は攻撃を受けると自動的に反撃する、人類滅亡爆弾で応戦。緊迫した状況のなか、ついに両国主脳はホットラインで和解する。だが1機の米軍爆撃機が、それを知らずに任務を遂行してしまう。
 『ピンク・パンサー』シリーズのクルーゾー警部でおなじみのイギリスの名優ピーター・セラーズが、米大統領、英国軍大佐、マッドサイエンティストの1人3役を怪演。ストレンジラブ博士のヒトラー総統をパロった大演説シーンは必見だ。（山内拓哉）

ピーター・セラーズの才能を遺憾なく発揮した作品です。亡くなられたことは返す返すも大いなる損失です。時代考証は、今では無くなってしまった東西冷戦構造を見事に捉え、緊迫感の中での、真面目な演技に思わず笑いが漏れてきます。豪華なキャスト布陣を見事に演出したキューブリックの采配に賛美を送り、本作品が風化されること無くDVDメディアとして残ることに感謝します。この時代に生きたものとして東西関係の緊迫感は現代とは異質で決定的な破壊が予測されていただけに、ブラックユーモアに仕上がった本作は、記憶に残る名作と言えます。

原爆という重い題材ながら、これほどまでに刺激的な笑いのネタとして扱った、キューブリックの才能と感性に唖然とさせられました。全編にあふれるユーモア、役者人の怪演（特に、ピーター・セラーズの三変化
！）、音楽やカット割りのセンスの良さなど、見所が多いです。それにしてもラストシーンのキ＊コ雲のバックにあんな曲を流すなんて・・・

。ブラックすぎます。
